Frontier Developments has announced a set of record-breaking financial results in its latest June trading update, highlighting a period of remarkable growth and strategic progress for the UK‑based game studio. The company reported that adjusted operating profit for the fiscal year 2026 climbed dramatically by 62 percent, reaching a historic high of £21.4 million. This figure represents the strongest performance ever recorded by Frontier and underscores the effectiveness of its recent business initiatives.
The surge in profitability was attributed to three core drivers that the firm emphasized in its statement: "strong trading, disciplined cost control, and higher tax and expenditure credits." In practice, this means that sales of existing titles continued to perform well, the company kept a tight rein on operating expenses, and it benefited from an improved fiscal environment that offered larger tax reliefs and other government‑backed incentives for research and development. Frontier also highlighted that, even without a one‑off £3.9 million windfall that stemmed from the sale of publishing rights in the previous financial year, the adjusted operating profit would still have more than doubled on a year‑over‑year basis. This point reinforces that the underlying business fundamentals are solid and not merely reliant on occasional, non‑recurring transactions.
Revenue across the board grew by 16 percent, climbing to £104.8 million. The bulk of this increase was driven by strong performance from flagship franchises such as Jurassic World Evolution 3, Planet Coaster, and Planet Zoo. These titles continue to attract large, engaged player bases and generate steady streams of income through base‑game sales, expansions, and in‑game microtransactions. Operating profit, which includes all core business activities before interest and tax, rose an impressive 97 percent to £25.0 million.
The company explained that this near‑doubling was the result of "strong underlying trading performance" combined with a one‑off transitional tax credit of £4.4 million, further illustrating the impact of favourable tax policies on the bottom line. In addition to the financial highlights, Frontier announced several notable leadership changes. Dan Lazarides was appointed chief marketing officer in the preceding month, bringing fresh perspective to the studio’s branding and market outreach efforts.
Founder David Braben will remain president and retain his founder status, but he will transition to a non‑executive director role effective 1 October 2026. This shift allows Braben to focus on strategic oversight while delegating day‑to‑day operational responsibilities to the executive team. Strategically, the studio is advancing its long‑term roadmap with a new partnership agreement with Disney.
Under this deal, Frontier will develop and publish a new title that leverages Disney’s extensive portfolio of intellectual property, opening the door to high‑profile collaborations and potentially expanding the studio’s audience reach. Looking ahead to product releases, Frontier confirmed that Planet Zoo 2 is slated for launch on 13 October 2026.
The sequel promises to build on the original’s success with enhanced simulation depth, richer ecosystems, and expanded customization options for players. Additionally, the studio announced that Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Deathwatch will hit the market before the close of FY27, adding a much‑anticipated entry to the beloved Warhammer franchise. Frontier is also pushing forward with its content management system (CMS) game initiative, a project that involves creating a new title based on the company’s own intellectual property.
The CMS game is "in full development and is on track," with the ambition of delivering roughly one CMS‑style release each year. This strategy is designed to diversify the studio’s portfolio and generate recurring revenue streams from a steady cadence of new releases. CEO Jo Cooke summed up the year’s achievements, stating: "FY26 was a landmark year for Frontier.
We delivered record financial performance, demonstrated the strength of our CMS strategy, and continued to invest in the world‑class franchises our players love, supporting vibrant communities and long‑term engagement across our portfolio. With a strong balance sheet, a talented team, and an exciting roadmap ahead, we are well positioned to deliver sustainable growth, enduring player value, and long‑term returns for our stakeholders." President David Braben added his perspective, expressing pride in the company’s accomplishments since its founding in 1994 and confidence in Jo Cooke’s leadership: "I am immensely proud of what our talented teams have achieved together since I founded Frontier in 1994, and excited about the opportunities ahead.
I have tremendous confidence in Jo as CEO to build on Frontier's strong foundations and deliver long‑term success, together with the excellent leadership team. This transition allows me to concentrate on what I can do to help that journey, including oversight of our games, and I look forward to continuing to support Frontier and Jo in the years to come."
