European Gaming Market Sees Resurgence with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The European gaming market witnessed a significant surge in sales, with 11.9 million video games sold last month. This represents a 1.5% increase from the same period last year, driven by a substantial rise in digital downloads. The latest Call of Duty installment, Modern Warfare 2, led the charge, surpassing FIFA 23 to claim the top spot after just one week on sale. Its first-week sales were 125% higher than those of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Vanguard, last year. In fact, Modern Warfare 2 is on the cusp of outselling Vanguard's lifetime sales across European markets after just two weeks. The game has already become the third best-selling title of the year, trailing behind Elden Ring. FIFA 23 also had a strong month, with sales up 4% compared to FIFA 22 during the same period last year. Other new releases, such as Gotham Knights and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, also made their mark on the charts. The PS5 emerged as the best-selling console of the month, narrowly edging out the Nintendo Switch, which suffered a steep decline in sales compared to the same period last year. The Xbox Series family of consoles was the only platform to post a year-on-year increase in sales, with a 26% rise. The accessories market saw a decline, with over 1.18 million add-on products sold, representing a 13% drop from the previous year. Additionally, almost 1.1 million points cards were sold, a 7% decrease from October 2021.
