Unity Completes Merger with IronSource, Reaffirms Commitment to Game Developers
The acquisition of IronSource by Unity is now complete, as announced by Unity CEO John Riccitiello in a recent blog post. This integration will incorporate IronSource's products, which focus on mobile app monetization and advertising, into the Unity platform. The merger is the latest in a series of expansions by Unity, following the acquisitions of Ziva Dynamics, Pixyz Software, SpeedTree, Parsec, SyncSketch, and Weta Digital. Unity's growing presence in various tech and entertainment sectors has raised concerns among developers about the company's dedication to the gaming industry. However, John Riccitiello has reiterated that supporting game developers remains at the core of Unity's mission. While acknowledging the benefits of the merger are particularly strong for mobile game developers using advertising, Riccitiello emphasized that Unity remains committed to developing features for PC, consoles, and XR. The company plans to integrate its technologies quickly and transparently, with more information on the benefits for mobile game developers to be shared in the coming week. The merger's announcement had also sparked concerns due to a past incident involving IronSource's first product being classified as malware. Unity has attributed this to 'bad actors' and noted that the IronSource desktop business in question was spun off several years ago. The merger was nearly blocked by AppLovin, a rival monetization specialist, which made a public offer to merge with Unity instead. However, Unity rejected this deal, and AppLovin subsequently withdrew its offer.
