Pioneering Sega Developer Rieko Kodama Passes Away

Renowned Sega game designer and producer Rieko Kodama has passed away at the age of 58. A tribute to Kodama was discovered in the staff credits of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 and shared on social media. According to IGN, Kodama's passing occurred on May 9, although details surrounding her death have not been disclosed out of respect for her family. Kodama's journey in the gaming industry began in 1984 as a graphic designer at Sega, with early credits including Alex Kidd, Phantasy Star, and the legendary Sonic The Hedgehog. She went on to direct Phantasy IV and Magic Knight Rayearth, and produced notable titles such as Skies of Arcadia and Sega Ages. Sonic The Hedgehog co-creator Yuji Naka paid tribute to Kodama on Twitter, reflecting on their time as Sega colleagues and collaborators on Phantasy Star and Sonic. "I have very fond memories of her, and I wanted to ensure everyone remembers her. May she rest in peace. Rieko Kodama, forever," Naka said.
