Keywords Studios has unveiled a new umbrella organization called FreeAnimal, which consolidates seven of its previously independent creative agencies into a single, streamlined entity designed to act as a one‑stop shop for video game developers, publishers, and brand partners. The move brings together a diverse set of capabilities under one brand, simplifying the process for clients who need a broad range of marketing, production, and creative services.
The seven entities that now operate under the FreeAnimal banner include the creative agencies Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, and Gnet, as well as the media‑production studios TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer. These firms are spread across key industry hubs such as Los Angeles, London, Brighton, Montreal, and Quebec, giving the new agency a truly global footprint. By pooling resources, talent, and regional insights, FreeAnimal can offer clients a consistent experience regardless of where a project originates.
All seven firms announced the restructuring on LinkedIn, each posting about the transition and describing it as the beginning of a new chapter where they will function as one cohesive creative agency. Existing contracts with current clients remain intact, ensuring continuity of service, while future initiatives will benefit from the combined expertise and scale of the newly formed FreeAnimal organization.
"Collectively, we work with the world's most ambitious gaming brands," said John Rosenberg, Global Head of FreeAnimal. He emphasized that the merger brings together distinct perspectives, geographic reach, and industry experience, resulting in a "wildly effective creative organisation" that blends the agility of boutique strike teams with the reach of a global operation.
FreeAnimal's guiding philosophy is summed up in the phrase "The Right Team for Every Game." This approach means assembling the precise mix of specialists—whether they are artists, writers, marketers, or technical producers—at the exact moment they are needed to address a specific challenge for each client. The aim is to deliver tailored solutions that are both creative and strategically sound. Keywords Studios itself was founded in 1998 as an outsourcing firm, initially focusing on providing voice‑over production services.
The company began an aggressive acquisition strategy in 2014, starting with the purchase of voice production studio Liquid Violet. Over the ensuing years, Keywords has added roughly 70 companies to its portfolio, expanding its service offering to include audio design, art creation, localisation, quality assurance, functional testing, engineering, player support, trailer production, marketing, and data analytics. The most recent additions to Keywords' roster include Certain Affinity, a co‑developer on the Halo franchise, and Wushu Studios, a work‑for‑hire studio, both of which were acquired in 2024.
Earlier in the year, Keywords also merged two of its public‑relations agencies—Fortyseven Communications and Indigo Pearl—after Fortyseven opened a new office in London, further consolidating its communications capabilities. By integrating Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, Gnet, TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer into FreeAnimal, Keywords aims to provide a seamless, end‑to‑end solution for game marketing and creative production.
Clients can now approach a single point of contact for everything from concept development and branding to trailer creation, community management, and post‑launch support. The unified structure also enables better allocation of resources, faster turnaround times, and more consistent quality across all deliverables.
The strategic rationale behind the consolidation reflects broader trends in the gaming industry, where developers and publishers increasingly seek partners who can handle multiple aspects of a game's lifecycle under one roof. This reduces the friction of coordinating between disparate vendors and allows for a more cohesive narrative and visual identity throughout a game's development, launch, and ongoing promotion.
FreeAnimal's presence in major creative hubs ensures that it can tap into local talent pools while maintaining a global perspective. Los Angeles offers proximity to major North American publishers and a vibrant entertainment ecosystem; London and Brighton provide access to Europe's rich design and storytelling traditions; Montreal and Quebec bring strong bilingual capabilities and a thriving game development community.
This geographic diversity not only enriches the creative output but also facilitates localized marketing strategies that resonate with regional audiences. Looking ahead, FreeAnimal plans to leverage its combined expertise to explore emerging formats such as virtual reality experiences, live‑streamed events, and interactive marketing campaigns that blend gameplay with brand storytelling. By positioning itself as "The Right Team for Every Game," the agency intends to stay at the forefront of innovation, helping gaming brands navigate an ever‑evolving market landscape while delivering compelling, high‑impact creative work. In summary, the creation of FreeAnimal marks a significant step in Keywords Studios' evolution from a collection of specialized service providers into a unified, globally‑scaled creative powerhouse.
The agency's integrated model promises greater efficiency, richer creative collaboration, and a more strategic partnership for the world's most ambitious gaming brands.
