PS5 Reaches 2 Million Sales Milestone in the UK, Becoming the Fourth Fastest-Selling Console of All Time

The UK has seen the PlayStation 5 surpass two million sales, making it the fourth fastest home console to reach this milestone, tied with the PS3 but trailing behind the PS4, PS2, and Nintendo Wii. GfK has provided the data for this achievement. Despite being hindered by stock shortages, the console has generated £919 million, making it the most lucrative console to reach two million sales. In comparison, the Wii had generated £358 million, the PS4 £700 million, and the Xbox One £726 million at the same sales point. GfK's Dorian Bloch noted, 'Considering the stock issues surrounding the PS5, it's likely that it would have easily surpassed the PS3's sales rate to 2m units.' He added, 'The significantly higher price of the PS5 hasn't deterred sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium over the average price of both consoles during this period. The PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units. The Xbox One took 104 weeks to reach two million sales, while the Xbox 360 took 110 weeks. Although the Xbox 360 was slower to reach this mark, it eventually overtook the Xbox One after three years and remains Microsoft's largest install base in the UK, with around nine million units sold. The Switch took approximately 2.69 years to reach two million units sold, but with the introduction of the Switch Lite and the subsequent boost from the COVID-19 lockdown, it is expected to add significant numbers to its install base, especially with the upcoming launch of Zelda.
