Onoma Emerges as the New Identity for Square Enix Montreal

Following its acquisition by Embracer five months ago, Square Enix Montreal has unveiled its new identity as Onoma. The company's website explains that the name 'Onoma' is derived from the Greek word for 'name', and was chosen after considering 165 different options, with a key requirement being ease of pronunciation in both French and English. According to the announcement, the new brand will serve as an umbrella for multiple products, programs, and initiatives, each with its own distinct character. This development comes after Square Enix Montreal, along with Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, was sold to Embracer for $300 million, which also included the sale of several notable franchises such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Legacy of Kain. The acquisition was finalized in August, and since then, Embracer has continued to expand its portfolio, including the acquisition of the Lord of the Rings IP and other notable gaming assets.
