PS5 Takes the Lead as 2022's Best-Selling Console in the UK So Far
The PS5 experienced a significant surge in the UK during August, with a 56% increase in stock levels compared to July, according to GfK data. This boost has propelled the PS5 to become the UK's top-selling console of the year to date, surpassing the Nintendo Switch. The Switch also saw a 4% sales increase in August. Meanwhile, Xbox Series S and X sales remained stable, placing third overall. The total number of consoles sold in the UK in August was nearly 125,000, representing a 20% increase from the previous month. However, year-to-date console sales have declined by almost 36% compared to the same period in 2021, with under 880,000 consoles sold. In terms of game sales, both physical and digital, the UK saw 1.67 million games sold in August, which is a 10% decrease from August last year and a 3% drop from July. Saints Row emerged as the top-selling game of the month, with the Deep Silver title dominating digital sales but coming in second in physical retail sales behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Notably, despite a smaller install base, Saints Row sold 21% more copies on Xbox platforms. Following Saints Row, the next major new release was the PC version of Spider-Man Remastered, which has become Sony's fastest-selling PC game to date. Two Point Campus from Sega also made a strong debut, ranking eighth. It's worth noting that this data excludes sales of games bundled with consoles, such as the Horizon Forbidden West PS5 bundle. In the accessories sector, 547,122 add-on products were sold in August, a slight 0.7% decrease from July and a 14.5% drop from August last year. PlayStation's DualSense controllers continue to perform well, with the White and Black versions holding the top two spots. The Robot White Xbox Wireless Controller entered the chart at number three, and the Carbon Black version jumped 132 places to number eight, both having previously faced supply issues. The digital data includes sales from participating companies through platforms like Steam, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Nintendo Eshop, with major companies including Activision Blizzard, Bandai Namco, and Sony, though Nintendo and 505 Games are notable exceptions.
