Gamr Africa Aims to Boost Esports in Africa

The esports industry is a rapidly growing global business, with numerous tournaments and operations taking place worldwide. However, its presence in Africa is still in its infancy. Eniola Edun, CEO of Gamr Africa, is working to change this narrative. Gamr Africa is a dedicated esports platform designed to manage, track, and organize tournaments, providing a framework for gamers to turn pro. Since its inception last year, the platform has hosted over 130 tournaments across multiple countries, amassing a community of more than 65,000 gamers as of January. Additionally, Gamr Africa organized the GamrX pro gaming event, a Pan-African tournament featuring competitors from ten countries, which took place in Lagos, Nigeria, in April and attracted over 4,800 attendees. According to Edun, this type of esports event is unprecedented on the continent, representing a significant undertaking for the company. The logistical challenges were substantial, involving the selection of tournament titles, qualifiers in different countries, collaboration with local organizations, and broadcasting the event to 62 countries. The program also incorporated elements of pop culture, including performances by renowned African artists such as BNXN and Blaqbonez. Edun highlights the importance of establishing partnerships with brands and publishers, providing value to them while positioning Gamr Africa as a trusted esports partner. The event was sponsored by notable brands like Pepsi and Red Bull. Edun emphasizes that the company's success is rooted in its ability to collaborate with multiple professionals, offering various opportunities for individuals to utilize their skills in the esports industry, even if they are not professional gamers. As the CEO, Edun's role involves ensuring the organization's continued growth, supporting the community, and fostering partnerships with brands and sponsors. The company is planning to host more tournaments and events, including a dedicated 24-hour streaming schedule for competitive games. Edun notes that the support received during the planning stages and the event itself demonstrates the need for such esports events in Africa. Ultimately, Edun's goal is to maintain the platform's value by ensuring its optimal performance and listening to the community's suggestions. Gamr Africa is set to bring back the GamrX event, expanding it to more countries and players.
