Co-Defendant of GameStop Chairman in Insider Trading Case Found Deceased

Gustavo Arnal, the 52-year-old CFO of Bed Bath & Beyond, who was recently named in a lawsuit alleging insider trading alongside GameStop chairman Ryan Cohen, has been found dead, as reported by Business Insider. Arnal had been with Bed Bath & Beyond for two years, prior to which he held positions at notable companies including Avon, Walgreens, and Proctor & Gamble. The retailer has acknowledged his significant role in guiding the company through the pandemic. Following Cohen's acquisition of nearly 10% of Bed Bath & Beyond's shares through RC Ventures in March, the company's shares experienced a surge. Subsequently, an agreement was made to appoint three of Cohen's nominees to the board of directors, leading to the ousting of the company's CEO. After the shares quadrupled in value during an early August meme stock run, both Arnal and RC Ventures sold their shares, with Arnal selling $1 million worth and RC Ventures shedding its entire stake. This led to a significant decline in the stock price, prompting an investor to file a class-action lawsuit against Cohen and Arnal. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants knowingly disclosed false information, taking advantage of the inflated stock price to sell their shares at artificially inflated prices to unsuspecting investors. The suit also accuses Cohen of historically employing pump-and-dump schemes to raise capital. Cohen's involvement with Bed Bath & Beyond bears similarities to his previous dealings with GameStop, where RC Ventures initially acquired a 10% stake, leading to Cohen and his allies being appointed to the board of directors, and ultimately resulting in the departure of GameStop's CEO.
