Meta Expands VR Presence with Acquisition of Haptic Technology Firm Lofelt

Meta continues to strengthen its position in the virtual reality sector with the acquisition of Lofelt, a Berlin-based company focused on haptic technology for VR experiences. According to a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, Meta has confirmed that members of the Lofelt team have joined the company. Lofelt was previously involved in developing haptic tools for mobile and PlayStation 5 games but ceased support for these products in July. The acquisition comes at a time when Meta is facing regulatory challenges, including an unresolved objection from the Federal Trade Commission regarding its planned acquisition of Within, a developer of VR fitness apps. The FTC has expressed concerns that Meta's acquisition strategy is designed to circumvent competition, rather than fostering innovation through internal development. Meta's journey into VR began with the acquisition of Oculus in 2014 and has since been augmented by the purchase of several other VR-focused companies, including BigBox VR, Sanzaru Games, Ready at Dawn, Downpour Interactive, and Beat Games, the studio behind the popular Beat Saber.
