Mainstream Games Like The Lord of the Rings Require Retail Presence
Although major AAA titles are increasingly shifting their sales to digital platforms, with 68% of Elden Ring's UK launch sales being digital, mainstream IPs still benefit from a retail presence, according to Daedalic's head of publishing, Jonas Hüsges. In a Gamescom interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Hüsges emphasized the need to engage with the target audience through various channels, including in-store availability, for the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game. This approach allows the game to reach a broader audience who may not be familiar with the game itself but recognize the IP. Hüsges noted that retailers have expressed positive feedback, as they can prominently feature the game in their stores, leveraging the IP's brand recognition to attract customers. Following Daedalic's acquisition by Nacon, which boasts extensive retail expertise, the company will co-publish Gollum, enhancing its retail strategy. Hüsges explained that partnering with Nacon was a strategic decision, given the game's scale and Nacon's experience in the field. Having previously ceased retail operations for indie games due to the limited profitability of $20 physical games, Daedalic is now reviving its retail efforts for mainstream titles like The Lord of the Rings. The game, initially scheduled for release on September 1, was delayed by a few months earlier this year.
