Moo Yu's Journey to the Heart of Game Development
Moo Yu, a seasoned programmer with credits at Insomniac Games and Media Molecule, reflects on his journey, from his early days in Southern California to his current role as creative director at Team Artichoke. Despite his accomplishments, Yu feels he's still finding his footing, particularly in his current position, which he accepted with some reluctance due to his aversion to the title of creative director. Yu's career has been marked by a desire to create games that align with his values, leading him to work on projects like LittleBigPlanet at Media Molecule and Knights and Bikes, a crowdfunded game that, despite its success, took a significant toll on him, resulting in burnout. His experiences have also led him to become involved in diversity initiatives, such as Ensemble and POC in Play, which have been eye-opening for him, allowing him to recognize and address personal barriers in his career. As he navigates his role at Team Artichoke, Yu is focused on creating games that have 'heart,' not just in their storytelling, but also in the way the studio operates, prioritizing ethics, diversity, and fairness. His current project, inspired by Greek mythology and Legally Blonde, aims to tell a story that incorporates the experiences of his team members, particularly women, and will be announced in a way that gives credit to the team as individuals.
