Digital Game Sales Surge in the UK, Accounting for 75% of Total Sales

In August, the UK video game market saw a total of 1.74 million games sold, marking a slight decline of 1.5% from the previous year, according to GSD data. The month was relatively quiet for the gaming industry, with the notable exception of Take-Two, which had a strong performance with GTA 5 and GTA Online ranking high in the charts. Borderlands also made a comeback, re-entering the charts after promotional activities tied to the Borderlands movie and the announcement of Borderlands 4. Notably, 75% of games sold by major publishers in the UK were digital, representing a 10% increase from August last year. New releases, such as Madden NFL 25, faced stiff competition, while classic games like TimeSplitters and Doom saw remastered versions released. The console market continued to experience a slow summer, with just under 75,000 units sold, a 3% drop from the previous month and 45% down from the same period last year. Accessory sales also declined, with 516,774 controllers and other items sold, down 4.5% from July and 9.6% from August last year.
