PS5 Reaches 4 Million Sales Mark in the UK, Trails Behind PS4 in Time
The PlayStation 5 has achieved a significant sales milestone, with four million consoles sold in the UK, according to data from GfK. This makes it the ninth console to reach this milestone in the UK, although it took 31 weeks longer than the PlayStation 4. In terms of sales speed, the PS5 ranks fifth in the UK, but its higher price point sets it apart from its predecessors. For instance, the PlayStation 1, which is the fourth-fastest selling console, dropped to £129 after 76 weeks and was under £100 by the time it reached four million sales. The PS5 has generated more revenue than any other console at this sales point, with nearly £1.85 billion in revenue, surpassing the PS4's £1.26 billion. The Nintendo Wii remains the fastest console to reach four million sales, with a launch price of £180 and a price of £140 after three years. The PS2 and PS4 also achieved this milestone quickly, with the PS4 being the third fastest. GfK's games boss, Dorian Bloch, notes that the era of cheap consoles is over, with the PS5 and other modern consoles having higher price points than their predecessors.
