Navigating Uncertainty in the Games Industry: Strategies for Resilience
The recent wave of layoffs and studio closures in the gaming industry has left many professionals reeling. A panel discussion at the BAFTA Games Mental Health Summit explored ways to navigate this uncertainty and maintain resilience. Hosted by psychologist Stuart Chaun, the panel featured One Player Mission founder Kim Parker Adcock and sound designer Konstantin Semionov, who shared their personal experiences with layoffs from different perspectives. Parker Adcock, who recently spoke about the closure of OPM, now works outside the gaming industry as an operations manager for a charity, while also serving as vice chairperson of Safe in Our World's board of trustees. Semionov, who joined the industry full-time in 2023, was affected by the redundancies at Frontier and became an employee representative during this process. The discussion centered on how to cope with challenging times, with Chaun emphasizing the importance of processing emotions and identifying feelings to approach situations more objectively. Parker Adcock and Semionov shared their emotional journeys, with Parker Adcock experiencing sadness and guilt when closing OPM, while Semionov felt panic and stress, likening it to playing Silent Hill 2. Semionov became an employee representative to help his team and gather information, allowing them to plan and make informed decisions. The panel stressed the value of venting with trusted colleagues before discussing solutions with management, suggesting that setting up a channel for team members to share concerns can be beneficial. Semionov recommended asking questions in a non-adversarial manner to get more responses from management. The discussion also highlighted the importance of seeking support from trusted individuals, whether within or outside the industry. Parker Adcock found solace in speaking with her dad, who had experienced similar adversities in his own business, while Semionov valued the understanding and support from industry peers. The key to resilience, according to Parker Adcock, lies in responding to situations, rather than trying to change them. Semionov suggested that reflecting on contributions and achievements can boost self-confidence, while taking time away from the industry can provide a new perspective on one's career. Ultimately, the panel concluded that even in dire situations, there is always the potential for opportunity and growth.
