Portugal's Thriving Game Development Scene: Unlocking Its Full Potential

Portugal made a significant impression at the recent GDC, with over 50 delegates from 20 companies in attendance, marking a major milestone in the country's game development industry. This upward trend is further reinforced by the establishment of the Gaming Hub in Lisbon, a dedicated co-working space aimed at fostering innovation, collaboration, and growth within the gaming sector. According to Diogo Rato, executive director of the Portuguese Game Developer Association, the industry has experienced remarkable growth, with the number of studios increasing by over 20% annually since 2010, and revenue growing at a CAGR of 41% during the same period. The official turnover for 2022 was over €38 million, with the number of people working in the game industry expanding by approximately 53% each year since 2018. Rato attributes this success to various factors, including the country's high quality of life, strong English proficiency, and an abundance of skilled engineering graduates. However, the industry still faces challenges, such as a shortage of senior-level professionals and limited government support. To address these issues, the Portuguese Game Developer Association is working closely with local authorities to explore the implementation of tailored incentives for game development productions. The opening of the Gaming Hub in Lisbon is a significant step towards tackling some of these challenges, providing a space for startups and studios to scale and create synergies between mentors, investors, and other companies in the sector. Looking ahead, Rato is optimistic about the future of Portugal's game development industry, citing the rich cultural heritage and the potential for game development education to lead to a fresh wave of skilled young talent. With several major companies, including Pole To Win and GlobalStep, announcing plans to establish a presence in Portugal, the country is poised to become a significant player in the global game development market.
