The Revival of 1ReasonToBe: Why It Matters Now More Than Ever at GDC 2024

The iconic 1ReasonToBe panel is making a comeback at GDC 2024, marking its first in-person appearance since 2019. Hosted by Laia Bee, CEO of Pincer Games and president of the Uruguayan Game Developers Association, the panel features five women from diverse backgrounds who will share their personal stories and experiences in the gaming industry. Given recent events, such as the backlash against Sweet Baby Inc, it's clear that panels like 1ReasonToBe are still essential. Bee notes, 'We hope things improve year after year, but unfortunately, that's not the case. Politically, it's becoming increasingly complicated for women worldwide, with rising fascist parties, online harassment, and workplace harassment.' Bee believes that the panel will be a beacon of inspiration, especially during these challenging times, with a global economic crisis and industry layoffs. The panelists, including Aevee Bee, Indrani Ganguly, Alexandra Marzuqa Giacaman, Bahiyya Khan, and Isabel Vásquez, are making significant contributions to the industry despite limited resources. The 1ReasonToBe panel has a rich history, dating back to 2013 when it was founded by Brenda Romero and Leigh Alexander. It has since evolved to feature individuals from marginalized backgrounds, with Rami Ismail taking the helm in 2016 and giving the platform a geographically diverse approach. Bee, who was initially set to host the panel in 2020, is committed to honoring the panel's roots while incorporating Ismail's approach. She aims to create a platform where underrepresented voices can share their stories and expertise, inspiring others to continue pushing forward in the industry. The panelists come from various parts of the world, including India, Mexico, Chile, South Africa, and the United States, each with their unique experiences and contributions to the gaming industry. Bee highlights the importance of having a Palestinian game developer, Alexandra Marzuqa, on the panel, as well as a trans woman, Aevee Bee, to ensure representation and diversity. Bee emphasizes the significance of hearing from developers from all walks of life, allowing attendees to grasp the diverse reality of the world within the industry. She hopes that the panel will inspire the audience, broaden their horizons, and help them see that they are not alone in their struggles. Ultimately, Bee wants the panel to be a source of positivity, showcasing the remarkable work being done by individuals with limited resources, and inspiring others to continue thriving in the industry.
