Inclusive Gaming: Breaking Down Barriers at GDC 2024

The 2024 Game Developers Conference kicked off with a panel discussion on fostering diversity and inclusivity in game communities. Moderated by Jennifer Zall, the session featured Jaclyn Simmons and Andy Wong from Capcom, as well as Kayla Mansell from Lilith Games. The conversation emphasized the benefits of promoting inclusivity, highlighting the challenges that arise from outdated industry practices. Mansell noted that people's resistance to change is a major obstacle, stressing the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing world. She also underscored the importance of education in breaking down cultural barriers and biases. Wong pointed out that executives often need to be convinced of the positive impact of diversity initiatives on a company's growth and sales. Simmons discussed her experiences with tokenism, encouraging companies to approach diversity with authenticity and a clear intention. All three panellists agreed on the significance of data in demonstrating the benefits of diversity, as well as its importance from a human perspective. Wong shared his personal experience of seeking Asian representation in games and movies, emphasizing the joy of seeing oneself reflected in media. Mansell added that representation matters in all aspects of a game, including marketing campaigns, and shared her own experiences of feeling like she didn't fit in. The panellists concluded that inclusivity is essential for creating a sense of belonging and community in gaming.
