The Creation of Overwatch 2's Samoan Hero

The world of video games has few characters of Samoan descent, but Blizzard Entertainment has expanded this list with the introduction of Mauga, the 39th hero in Overwatch 2. As one of the few characters from Oceania in a major AAA title, Mauga's development was a significant undertaking. GamesIndustry.biz spoke with Kenny Hudson, lead hero producer, about the journey of crafting this new tank character. The concept of Mauga began taking shape in 2018, shortly after the team was inspired by concept art and narrative influences. Hudson notes that the initial plan for Mauga took a different direction, with early abilities focusing on healing, which eventually led to the creation of Sigma in 2019. These abilities didn't align with Mauga's personality, prompting a reevaluation of his character. The importance of cultural representation and authenticity was paramount in Mauga's development. To achieve this, the team collaborated with cultural consultants, including artist Si'i Liufau, a specialist in contemporary Polynesian tattoos and Tataus. Liufau provided valuable feedback on Mauga's initial tattoo design, which was Polynesian-inspired but lacked authenticity. The team worked closely with Liufau to recreate the tattoo, ensuring it was accurate and respectful of Samoan culture. However, the process was not without challenges, as the team had to balance authenticity with the technical limitations of the game engine. Hudson emphasized the need to avoid stereotypes and ensure that Mauga's character was respectful and accurate. The development of Mauga was put on hold as the team focused on Sigma, but the brainstorming sessions ultimately led to the creation of a new character. The pandemic also impacted the development process, causing delays and changes to the work structure. As a result, Mauga's release was pushed back, and the team had to adjust their schedule to ensure the character met their standards. Hudson noted that the pandemic forced the team to adapt and find new ways to work together, which ultimately delayed Mauga's release. The team decided to swap Mauga's release date with that of Ramattra, allowing for more time to dedicate to Mauga's development. This decision gave the team the opportunity to fine-tune the character and ensure he fit seamlessly into the game's universe. Players had the chance to try out Mauga during a weekend playtest at Blizzcon 2023, providing valuable feedback that helped shape the final version of the character. The playtest revealed areas for improvement, including Mauga's perceived survivability, and highlighted the need for balance changes. The team also received unexpected feedback on Mauga's voiceover work, with players analyzing and discussing the meaning behind his voice lines. Reflecting on the development process, Hudson emphasized the importance of learning and growth, noting that the experience of creating Mauga was a valuable opportunity to learn about a new culture and expand his knowledge.
