Embracing Neurodiversity in the Games Industry: A Guide to Success
The games industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of supporting neurodiverse individuals, but there is still much work to be done. A recent panel discussion at EGX 2023 brought together members of The Neurodivergent Game Dev Collective to share their experiences and offer advice on how to navigate the industry as a neurodivergent person. The panel included Georgie Christoforou, Cameron Keywood, and Dom Shaw, who shared their insights on how to succeed in the industry and how employers can provide support. One of the key topics discussed was the importance of disclosure - whether or not to reveal one's neurodiverse status during the job interview process. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, the panel agreed that it is essential for employers to create a safe and inclusive environment where individuals feel comfortable disclosing their needs. Christoforou emphasized the importance of researching a company's policies and values before applying, and Shaw suggested that neurodiverse candidates should not be afraid to ask about support and accommodations during the interview process. The panel also discussed the value of mentorship programs, such as Limit Break, and the importance of networking and building relationships within the industry. However, they acknowledged that networking can be challenging, especially for neurodiverse individuals, and suggested that organizations like the Neurodivergent Game Dev Collective can provide valuable support and resources. In terms of what employers can do to support neurodiverse employees, the panel suggested a range of initiatives, including neurodiversity awareness training, sensory-friendly rooms, and flexible working arrangements. They also emphasized the importance of treating neurodivergent colleagues with fairness and respect, and ensuring that they have equal access to opportunities and resources. Ultimately, the panel agreed that embracing neurodiversity is essential for creating a thriving and inclusive games industry, and that by working together, we can build a more supportive and welcoming environment for all.
