From Fan Game to Published Title: The Journey of Protodroid Delta
Today marks the release of Protodroid Delta, a 3D action-platformer developed by solo dev Adam Kareem. Kareem's journey as a hobbyist developer began with creating fan games based on Sonic and Mega Man, which eventually led to the creation of Protodroid Delta. With a background in mechanical engineering and a full-time job in tech, Kareem balanced his dream project with family responsibilities. He started working on Protodroid Delta in late 2019, after releasing several fan games that gained traction online. The project was later picked up by Humble Games as part of its Black Game Developer Fund in 2020. Kareem's goal was to create a game with diverse character designs, sampling from different cultures and featuring predominantly female leads. He notes that the gaming industry often lacks representation, with many games featuring homogeneous characters. Protodroid Delta aims to change that, offering a unique gaming experience with a distinct personality. Kareem's journey as a solo developer has not been easy, but with the support of Humble Games, he has been able to bring his vision to life. Looking ahead, Kareem acknowledges that his current situation may not be sustainable, and he may need to explore smaller projects or find new ways to balance his work and family life.
