European Gaming Charts for August: GTA 5 Tops Saints Row
The latest Saints Row game narrowly lost the top spot in the European August charts to Grand Theft Auto 5, a series it has long been compared to. Despite new releases such as Saints Row, Spider-Man Remastered, and Two Point Campus, game sales dropped 12.4% compared to August 2021. Grand Theft Auto 5 was also the top game in August 2021. A total of 7.7 million video games were sold across Europe, with GTA 5 leading digital sales and Nintendo Switch Sports leading physical sales. Physical game sales reached 3.2 million, with Nintendo Switch Sports being the best-selling physical game. Gran Turismo 7 saw a significant increase in sales due to retail promotions and increased PS5 console stock. The Nintendo Switch outsold PlayStation consoles in Europe, with 310,000 consoles sold. This represents a 19% decline in console sales compared to August 2021. The PS5 had its second-best month, while the Xbox Series S and X had their fourth-best month. The accessories market was led by the PS5 DualSense controller, with 1.18 million add-on products sold, a 9% decline from 2021. Points and wallet cards saw a 5% decline, with 0.99 million sold.
