PS5 Surpasses Nintendo Switch as 2022's Best-Selling Console in the UK

The PS5 experienced a significant surge in the UK market, with a 56% increase in stock levels in August compared to July, according to GfK data. This boost propelled the PS5 to the top of the UK's best-selling console list for the year so far, overtaking the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch also saw a modest 4% sales increase in August. Meanwhile, Xbox Series S and X sales remained stable, securing third place overall. The total number of consoles sold in the UK during August reached nearly 125,000, marking a 20% rise from the previous month. However, the overall console sales for the year have declined by 36% compared to the same period in 2021, with approximately 880,000 consoles sold. In terms of game sales, the UK market saw 1.67 million games sold in August, representing a 10% decline from the previous year and a 3% drop from July. The newly released Saints Row game emerged as the best-selling title of the month, with a significant lead in digital sales but ranking second in physical retail behind Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Notably, the game performed 21% better on Xbox platforms despite the console's smaller install base. Other notable releases included the PC version of Spider-Man Remastered, which became Sony's fastest-selling PC game, and Two Point Campus from Sega. The data excludes sales of games bundled with consoles, such as the Horizon Forbidden West PS5 console bundle. In the accessories sector, 547,122 add-on products were sold in August, marking a slight 0.7% decline from July and a 14.5% drop from the previous year. PlayStation's DualSense controllers continued to dominate, with the White and Black versions holding the top two positions. The Robot White Xbox Wireless Controller debuted at number three, while the Carbon Black version jumped 132 places to number eight, both of which had previously faced supply issues.
