Studio Atelico Envisions the Future of Generative AI: Ethical, Low-Power, and Device-Based

In January of the previous year, gaming startup Studio Atelico unveiled the Atelico AI Engine, an on-device solution that eliminates the need for costly cloud-based services. Following this launch, the company secured $5 million in seed funding to redefine the role of generative AI in the gaming industry. Currently, the team is developing its first title using this proprietary technology. Bobium Brawlers, a turn-based creature battler, serves as a testbed for Studio Atelico's AI-driven ecosystem, which utilizes generative AI trained on the studio's own artists' work to generate creatures. According to Chief Product Officer Chris Olson, the studio is aware of potential concerns regarding AI ethics and is committed to addressing these issues. Olson emphasizes that the studio's goal is to use technology to uplift humans, rather than replace them, and has introduced the Artist Rights Contract (ARC) to protect artists' rights and ensure fair compensation. Studio Atelico CEO Piero Molino echoes this sentiment, stating that the studio's approach is ethical and does not involve replacing human artists. In a talk at Nordic Game, co-founder and Game Design Director Ennio De Nucci discussed the studio's on-device AI technology, highlighting its benefits, including low power consumption and the elimination of the need for constant online connectivity. De Nucci also noted that the use of on-device AI reduces costs associated with cloud-based services. Molino believes that players will form a stronger bond with creatures in Bobium Brawlers due to the personalized prompts used in the game. The studio aims to use AI to expand the possibilities of game design, rather than simply integrating it into existing concepts. With the support of $5 million in funding, Studio Atelico plans to develop small games, gather feedback, and iterate on future projects, with the ultimate goal of becoming a leading developer of AI-powered games.
