Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick Downplays Netflix Debut of GTA 6 as Merely an Appetizer
According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the upcoming Netflix premiere of GTA 6 gameplay is just the beginning of the game's marketing campaign. In a recent call, Zelnick stated that the premiere, set to air on August 27th, is merely "an hors d'oeuvre" with more to come. When asked about the details of the arrangement with Netflix, Zelnick remained tight-lipped, describing Netflix as "a great marketing and distribution partner" and the deal as "a groundbreaking partnership" arranged by Rockstar. He also declined to share specifics about pre-order levels, despite the announcement of an $80 price point for the basic version and $100 for the Ultimate Edition, saying only that the results so far have been "very encouraging". Zelnick described the level of pre-orders as "unprecedented and astonishing" but noted that it's difficult to predict how these pre-orders will translate into sales, given that they are unlike anything seen before in the industry. He emphasized that the company is not getting ahead of itself, as "nobody's ever seen anything like this before" and "we haven't sold one unit yet". Zelnick expressed optimism about the growth of the gaming industry, particularly with the rise of streaming technology, which he believes will lead to a significant expansion of the install base. He predicts that low-latency streaming will become available within the next three years, potentially increasing the install base by a factor of 10. However, he stressed that this is his personal opinion and not a company forecast. Zelnick also addressed concerns about potential staff cuts after the game's release, stating that the company has moved away from "boom and bust cycles" and is instead focused on providing ongoing content and engagement opportunities for consumers. He expressed confidence in Take-Two's decision to remain a public company, citing the benefits of transparency and the ability to use securities for acquisitions and raising capital.
