UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out a new venture called the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a dedicated business‑focused programme designed specifically for independent game studios operating out of the United Kingdom. The Academy’s primary mission is to arm early‑stage developers with a practical toolkit that enables them to devise robust go‑to‑market (GTM) strategies while simultaneously cultivating sustainable, engaged audiences for their titles. At its core, the Academy is structured around six comprehensive online modules. Each module tackles a critical component of the GTM process, beginning with diagnostic techniques and data‑driven insights that help studios understand their market position and player demographics.
Subsequent sessions dive into the creation of a coherent marketing strategy, the planning and execution of promotional campaigns, and the strategic use of Discord as a hub for community interaction and feedback. The curriculum also covers studio branding, ensuring that each developer can present a clear, compelling identity to both media and consumers.
To enrich the learning experience, a series of industry veterans and guest speakers will share real‑world case studies and actionable advice throughout the course. The Academy is intentionally selective, opening its doors to just ten to twelve studios per cohort.
This limited intake allows for a highly personalised experience, with participants receiving direct mentorship and feedback. The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, which will be hosted within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month. This initial meeting provides an opportunity for participants to network, meet the faculty, and set the stage for the collaborative work ahead.
Following the launch event, the bulk of the instruction will be delivered through virtual sessions scheduled across November and early December, offering flexibility while maintaining a steady rhythm of learning. The final phase of the Academy culminates in another face‑to‑face event where each studio will showcase the go‑to‑market plan they have refined throughout the weeks of study. These presentations will be based on a shared case study that all participants have tackled together, allowing the cohort to benchmark their progress against one another and receive constructive critique from peers and industry judges alike.
Studios interested in joining the inaugural cohort can submit their applications via the link provided by UKIE. The application window closes on 30 September 2026, so prospective participants are encouraged to act promptly to secure a spot. "Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. He emphasized that many indie teams excel creatively but often struggle with the logistical and promotional aspects required to bring a game to a wider audience.
"The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow," Poole added. Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for the EMEA region, echoed this sentiment, noting the symbiotic relationship between the UK indie scene and Discord’s community‑building tools.
"The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games," Sanna said. Beyond the core curriculum, the Academy will provide participants with access to a suite of resources that extend beyond the classroom.
These include template marketing plans, analytics dashboards, and a curated library of best‑practice guides on community management. Additionally, studios will benefit from direct feedback loops with Discord’s product team, gaining insights into upcoming platform features that could be leveraged for player engagement.
The timing of the Academy aligns with a broader industry trend: the increasing importance of community‑first approaches in game development. As platforms like Discord become the default gathering place for gamers, developers who can effectively harness these spaces are better positioned to generate word‑of‑mouth buzz, secure early adopters, and sustain long‑term player retention. By integrating community strategy directly into the GTM blueprint, the Academy aims to close the gap that often separates a great game concept from commercial success. In summary, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a concerted effort by UKIE, Discord, and GameFlex to fill a critical support gap for indie developers.
Through a blend of structured learning, hands‑on mentorship, and real‑world application, the programme aspires to empower UK studios to launch their games with confidence, reach the right audiences, and build vibrant, lasting communities around their creations.
