UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to unveil a new educational venture called the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a business‑focused programme aimed squarely at supporting independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. The Academy is built around the belief that many promising titles stumble not because of weak concepts or poor design, but because their creators lack the structured approach and resources needed to reach and retain an audience.
By offering a blend of strategic guidance, practical tools, and direct mentorship from industry veterans, the Academy seeks to fill that gap and give early‑stage developers a clear roadmap to market success. The core of the Academy consists of six comprehensive online modules. Each module tackles a distinct aspect of the commercial side of game development. Participants begin with a diagnostic phase that helps them assess their current position, identify strengths, and pinpoint weaknesses in their existing outreach efforts.
This is followed by a deep dive into market research and insight gathering, enabling studios to understand their target demographics, competitive landscape, and emerging trends. The subsequent module focuses on constructing a robust marketing strategy, covering everything from brand positioning and messaging to budget allocation and timeline planning. Execution is a critical component of any plan, and the Academy dedicates a full module to campaign rollout.
Here, studios learn how to design, launch, and optimise multi‑channel marketing campaigns, leveraging social media, influencer partnerships, press outreach, and paid advertising. The programme also places a strong emphasis on community building through Discord, which has become a central hub for gamer interaction.
In this module, participants explore best practices for setting up servers, fostering healthy discussion, organising events, and using Discord’s suite of tools—such as bots, roles, and analytics—to keep their community engaged and growing. Brand identity and studio presentation round out the curriculum.
Studios are guided through the process of creating a cohesive visual and verbal brand, developing press kits, and crafting compelling narratives that resonate with both players and potential investors. Throughout the six weeks, a roster of industry guest speakers—including seasoned publishers, marketing experts, and successful indie founders—share real‑world experiences and answer questions, providing participants with a breadth of perspectives that enrich the learning experience. The Academy is intentionally limited to a small cohort of ten to twelve studios to ensure each team receives personalised attention and ample opportunity for peer networking.
The programme kicks off with an in‑person kickoff session at EGX, held within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month. This opening event allows participants to meet one another, hear introductory remarks from UKIE and Discord representatives, and set expectations for the weeks ahead. Following the live launch, the curriculum moves online, with scheduled webinars, interactive workshops, and collaborative assignments running throughout November and early December.
At the conclusion of the online segment, the Academy returns to a physical setting for a final showcase event. During this gathering, each studio presents a fully formed go‑to‑market plan that they have developed as part of a shared case study throughout the course. These presentations are not only a chance to demonstrate what the teams have learned, but also an opportunity to receive feedback from a panel of experts and potentially attract interest from publishers, investors, or media outlets. Applications for the inaugural cohort are now open, with a deadline of 30 September 2026.
Interested developers can submit their proposals through the dedicated application portal provided by UKIE. The selection committee will evaluate candidates based on criteria such as the originality of the game concept, the stage of development, and the team’s commitment to leveraging community‑focused strategies.
"Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. He emphasized that the Academy offers a structured environment where indie teams can dedicate focused effort to these critical business tasks, with direct input from Discord—an platform that has become indispensable for modern gaming communities. Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, echoed this sentiment, stating, "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive.
We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." His remarks highlight Discord’s commitment to nurturing the ecosystem by providing tools and expertise that empower developers to cultivate vibrant, loyal fan bases. In summary, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a strategic collaboration between UKIE, Discord, and GameFlex, designed to equip UK indie studios with the knowledge, skills, and network needed to transition from concept to commercial success.
By blending diagnostic insight, strategic planning, hands‑on community management, and brand development, the programme aims to turn creative vision into sustainable market presence. Studios that secure a place in the cohort will not only walk away with a polished launch plan but also with a deeper understanding of how to harness Discord’s community‑building capabilities—a vital advantage in today’s highly connected gaming landscape.
