UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to roll out the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a dedicated business‑focused programme aimed at bolstering independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. This collaboration brings together the industry‑wide reach of UKIE, the community‑building expertise of Discord, and the practical insights of GameFlex to create a comprehensive learning experience for developers who are still in the early phases of their studio’s growth. The Academy’s core mission is to equip fledgling developers with the knowledge, tools, and practical frameworks they need to design effective go‑to‑market (GTM) plans and to nurture sustainable, engaged audiences for their titles. While many indie teams possess strong creative visions, they often lack the time, resources, or strategic guidance required to translate those ideas into successful market launches.

By addressing this gap, the Academy hopes to reduce the high attrition rate that frequently affects promising projects before they ever reach a broader player base. The curriculum is structured around six distinct online modules, each targeting a critical component of the GTM process.

The first module delves into diagnostics and market insight gathering, teaching studios how to conduct competitive analyses, identify target demographics, and interpret player data to inform strategic decisions. The second module moves into the creation of a coherent marketing strategy, covering everything from brand positioning to channel selection and budget allocation. In the third module, participants learn how to design and execute marketing campaigns that resonate with their intended audiences, with an emphasis on measurable outcomes and iterative improvement. A unique element of the Academy is its dedicated focus on Discord as a community‑building platform.

The fourth module explores best practices for leveraging Discord’s suite of tools—such as server customization, bots, events, and moderation features—to foster vibrant, interactive player communities. This is complemented by a fifth module that addresses studio branding, guiding developers on how to craft a consistent visual and narrative identity across all touchpoints, from social media to storefront listings. To enrich the learning experience, the programme invites seasoned industry professionals to serve as guest speakers. These experts share real‑world case studies, offer mentorship, and provide feedback on participants’ evolving GTM plans.

Their involvement ensures that the theoretical content is anchored in practical, actionable advice. The Academy is limited to a small cohort of ten to twelve studios, allowing for a highly personalized experience and ample opportunities for direct interaction with mentors and peers. The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, held within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month. This initial session sets the stage for networking, team introductions, and a hands‑on workshop that aligns participants with the Academy’s objectives.

Following the launch event, the curriculum proceeds through a series of virtual sessions scheduled throughout November and early December. These online meetings combine live lectures, breakout discussions, and collaborative assignments, enabling studios to apply concepts to their own projects in real time. Throughout the duration of the Academy, each studio works on a shared case study that serves as a practical testbed for the strategies they are developing.

The programme culminates in a second in‑person event, where each participating studio presents the go‑to‑market plan they have crafted over the course of the weeks. This final showcase not only provides a platform for studios to demonstrate their progress to industry stakeholders but also offers valuable feedback that can be immediately incorporated into future launch activities. Studios interested in joining the Academy can submit their applications via the provided link, with the deadline set for 30 September 2026. The selection process will consider factors such as the studio’s current stage of development, the uniqueness of their game concepts, and their commitment to community building.

"Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. "The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." By combining strategic marketing education with hands‑on community‑building techniques, the Go‑To‑Market Academy aims to empower UK indie developers to launch their games with confidence, reach the right players, and sustain long‑term growth in an increasingly competitive market.
