ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been synonymous with celebrating all forms of gaming, from digital to tabletop. While the original Unplugged concept debuted a decade ago in Pennsylvania, focusing exclusively on board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other analog experiences, the Houston edition promises to expand that legacy and bring it to a new, enthusiastic audience in the southern United States.
The inaugural PAX Unplugged event was launched in 2017 in the state of Pennsylvania, a modest but highly successful gathering that highlighted the growing popularity of tabletop gaming. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explained Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Gonzalez emphasized that the rise of board‑game cafés, Kickstarter‑funded indie projects, and a resurgence of classic hobbyist culture have all contributed to a vibrant ecosystem that PAX is uniquely positioned to showcase. When the team began evaluating the feasibility of hosting another Unplugged event, they considered a range of major metropolitan areas across the United States.
Their criteria included demand from existing and prospective exhibitor partners, the availability of suitable venues, and the overall infrastructure needed to support a large‑scale convention. "We were always partial to returning to the South," Gonzalez noted, recalling early brainstorming sessions that weighed options such as Atlanta, Dallas, and Nashville.
After a thorough comparison, Houston emerged as the clear front‑runner. The city not only offered a modern convention facility and robust transportation network but also presented an untapped market of tabletop enthusiasts who had missed out on a dedicated PAX experience since the cancellation of PAX South. PAX South, which had been a staple of the PAX calendar since its launch in 2015, was abruptly discontinued in 2021 due to a combination of logistical challenges and the lingering impacts of the global pandemic. The final PAX South event took place in San Antonio in January 2020, leaving a loyal fan base in the region without a local gathering point for their favorite hobby.
"It was a disappointment for many of our southern fans," Gonzalez admitted, "and we felt a responsibility to bring the PAX spirit back to them in a meaningful way." The upcoming PAX Unplugged Houston will be hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center, a state‑of‑the‑art facility located in downtown Houston. The convention will run from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, providing three full days of programming, networking, and hands‑on play.
Attendees can expect a sprawling expo floor dedicated to analog gaming exhibitors, ranging from established publishers like Hasbro and Fantasy Flight Games to indie creators showcasing limited‑run Kickstarter projects. The exhibition space will be organized into thematic zones—such as board games, card games, role‑playing games, and hobby supplies—to help visitors navigate the myriad options and discover new titles that align with their interests. Beyond the expo, the schedule will be packed with a diverse array of panels and workshops.
Industry veterans will share insights on game design, publishing, and community building, while seasoned Dungeon Masters will host live role‑playing sessions that invite audience participation. Competitive tournaments will feature popular titles like Magic: The Gathering, Warhammer 40,000, and Settlers of Catan, offering both casual players and seasoned pros the chance to test their skills in a supportive environment. Community meetups—ranging from hobbyist hobby clubs to fan groups dedicated to specific franchises—will provide space for like‑minded individuals to connect, exchange ideas, and forge lasting friendships.
Gonzalez stressed that while there is always talk of expanding the PAX brand into new territories and formats, the immediate priority is to ensure that current events deliver the highest possible experience for both exhibitors and attendees. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he said. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each new location receives the resources, staffing, and promotional support needed to succeed.
In addition to the core programming, the Houston edition will introduce several new feature areas that have proven popular at other PAX locations. A dedicated "Indie Spotlight" stage will highlight emerging designers and provide them with a platform to demo their prototypes. A "Family Zone" will cater to younger audiences with age‑appropriate games and interactive workshops.
Meanwhile, a "Retro Gaming" corner will celebrate the history of tabletop gaming, showcasing classic titles and vintage accessories that evoke nostalgia for long‑time fans. Gonzalez also highlighted the resilience of the PAX community, noting that even during periods of industry turbulence—such as supply chain disruptions, shifting consumer trends, and the occasional market downturn—the passion of gamers remains unwavering.
"We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," he remarked.
Tickets for PAX Unplugged Houston, as well as applications for media representatives and content creators, are slated to go on sale later this year. Organizers anticipate strong demand, especially from fans who have been waiting for a dedicated tabletop event in the South since the last PAX South gathering.
By offering a comprehensive mix of exhibition space, educational panels, competitive play, and community-driven activities, PAX Unplugged Houston aims to become a cornerstone of the analog gaming calendar and a celebration of the creativity, camaraderie, and enduring enthusiasm that define the hobby.
