ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been synonymous with celebrating all forms of gaming, from digital to tabletop. The Unplugged series, originally conceived as a showcase for board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other analog experiences, debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017.
Since that inaugural event, the tabletop sector has continued its upward trajectory, gaining both mainstream visibility and a devoted following within the broader gaming community. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. Gonzalez highlights how the resurgence of board and card games—driven by innovative mechanics, compelling themes, and a desire for face‑to‑face interaction—has become a core pillar of PAX’s identity. This growth prompted the organizers to explore the feasibility of bringing another Unplugged experience to a new region, one that could serve both exhibitors and fans eager for a dedicated analog gaming celebration.
When the team began evaluating potential locations, they considered several major metropolitan areas, weighing factors such as exhibitor demand, local tabletop culture, transportation infrastructure, and venue capacity. "We were always partial to returning to the South," Gonzalez notes, recalling earlier discussions about reviving PAX presence in the region after the unfortunate cancellation of PAX South.
The decision ultimately fell on Houston, a city that not only offers a vibrant and expanding gaming scene but also provides the logistical advantages needed for a large‑scale convention. The George R. Brown Convention Center, with its expansive exhibit halls and modern amenities, was selected as the ideal venue to host the three‑day event. PAX South, which had been a beloved fixture for fans in Texas and surrounding states, was abruptly cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021, following its final show in San Antonio in January 2020.
The hiatus left a noticeable gap in the regional gaming calendar, and many community members expressed disappointment at losing a gathering spot for tabletop enthusiasts. By launching PAX Unplugged Houston, the organizers aim to fill that void and offer a fresh, focused experience that honors the legacy of PAX South while embracing the unique culture of analog gaming.
The Houston edition of PAX Unplugged is scheduled for Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027. Over the course of these three days, attendees can expect a bustling expo floor populated by a diverse array of tabletop publishers, independent designers, and hobby vendors. The exhibition space will showcase the latest board games, role‑playing adventures, miniature wargames, card games, and even experimental formats that push the boundaries of traditional play.
In addition to the vendor hall, the program will feature a robust lineup of panels and workshops led by industry veterans, designers, and community leaders. Topics will range from game design theory and narrative storytelling to inclusivity in tabletop spaces and the business side of publishing. Competitive play will also be a cornerstone of the event.
Organized tournaments for popular titles—such as legacy board games, strategic Eurogames, and collectible card games—will give participants the chance to test their skills against fellow enthusiasts. For those who prefer a more casual experience, community meet‑ups, demo tables, and open‑play areas will provide ample opportunities to discover new games, connect with fellow hobbyists, and perhaps even join a campaign that continues beyond the convention walls.
Gonzalez emphasizes that while expansion is on the horizon, the primary focus remains on delivering an exceptional experience for current exhibitors and attendees. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he says. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each new event receives the resources and planning needed to succeed. Looking ahead, Gonzalez hints at ongoing efforts to evolve the PAX brand across its East and West locations.
"We're actively expanding the shows, introducing new feature areas, stages, and programming tracks at East and West, while constantly delivering a great expo hall with new games for fans to discover," he explains. These enhancements may include dedicated spaces for indie creators, interactive storytelling stages, and immersive experiences that blend physical and digital elements. The announcement also underscores the deep gratitude the organizers feel toward the gaming community and industry partners.
"We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," Gonzalez remarks.
This sentiment resonates strongly after the setbacks of recent years, when many conventions faced cancellations or reduced capacities due to global events. Tickets for PAX Unplugged Houston, along with applications for media representatives and content creators, are slated to go on sale later this year. Prospective attendees are encouraged to keep an eye on the official PAX website and social media channels for updates on pricing, early‑bird specials, and additional programming announcements.
With its strategic location, thoughtfully curated program, and commitment to the analog gaming experience, PAX Unplugged Houston promises to become a cornerstone event for tabletop enthusiasts across the southern United States and beyond.
