UKIE, the United Kingdom’s leading trade association for the interactive entertainment sector, has joined forces with Discord and the consultancy GameFlex to unveil a new educational venture called the Go‑To‑Market Academy. This programme is expressly tailored for independent game studios operating out of the UK that are in the early stages of development and are looking to sharpen their commercial acumen. The core purpose of the Academy is to equip fledgling developers with a practical toolkit for constructing effective go‑to‑market plans and for nurturing vibrant, sustainable communities around their titles. While many indie teams possess strong creative visions and innovative gameplay concepts, they frequently encounter obstacles when it comes to translating those ideas into a market‑ready product that reaches the right audience.
The Academy seeks to close that gap by delivering structured, actionable guidance on everything from audience diagnostics to brand positioning. The curriculum is divided into six comprehensive online modules.
The first module introduces participants to diagnostic techniques and data‑driven insights, helping studios identify their target demographics, understand player behaviour, and benchmark against comparable titles. The second module moves into the formulation of a marketing strategy, covering topics such as messaging hierarchy, channel selection, and budget allocation. The third module focuses on the execution of marketing campaigns, teaching participants how to design, launch, and optimise promotional activities across social media, press outreach, and influencer partnerships.
A distinctive element of the Academy is its dedicated module on leveraging Discord as a community‑building platform. In this segment, studios learn how to set up servers, run events, moderate discussions, and use Discord’s suite of bots and analytics tools to foster engagement and gather feedback directly from players. This knowledge is complemented by a fourth module that delves into studio branding, guiding developers on how to craft a cohesive visual identity, narrative voice, and public relations strategy that resonates with both media outlets and gamers. Throughout the programme, industry veterans and guest speakers are invited to share real‑world experiences and case studies, providing participants with a richer perspective on what works—and what doesn’t—in the competitive indie landscape.
The Academy will accept a limited cohort of ten to twelve studios, ensuring that each team receives personalised attention and ample opportunity for peer interaction. The Academy kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, held within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month.
This opening session is designed to foster networking, allow participants to meet mentors, and set the stage for the collaborative case study that will run through the duration of the course. Following the launch, the remaining modules will be delivered online over November and early December, offering flexibility for developers who may be juggling tight production schedules. The programme culminates in a second face‑to‑face event, during which each studio will present the go‑to‑market plan they have crafted throughout the weeks of instruction. These presentations will be evaluated by a panel of experts, and the insights gained will be shared with the broader indie community, creating a ripple effect of best practices.
Studios interested in taking part can submit an application via the link provided by UKIE. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2026, after which the selection committee will review proposals based on criteria such as development stage, market potential, and commitment to community building. "Go‑to‑market planning is where many promising games stumble," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE.
"It isn’t a lack of creativity that holds them back, but rather the absence of time, resources, and expert guidance needed to build an audience and a community that can sustain the game’s growth. The Go‑To‑Market Academy offers indie studios a dedicated space to work through these challenges, with direct input from Discord—an essential platform for modern gaming communities." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for the EMEA region, added, "The UK indie scene is brimming with talent and opportunity.
We are thrilled to partner with UKIE to help these developers thrive. By teaching them how to harness Discord’s tools, we aim to empower them to connect with highly engaged gamers, foster strong community bonds, and ultimately drive the success of their games." In summary, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a strategic collaboration between a leading industry association, a premier communication platform, and a specialist consultancy, all united by the goal of strengthening the UK’s indie game ecosystem. By delivering a blend of data‑driven analysis, hands‑on marketing practice, community‑building techniques, and branding expertise, the Academy aspires to turn innovative game concepts into commercially viable products with loyal player bases. Studios that secure a spot in the cohort will not only gain valuable knowledge but also join a network of peers and mentors dedicated to elevating the indie gaming experience in the United Kingdom and beyond.
