ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been synonymous with celebrating all facets of gaming culture, from digital experiences to the tactile world of tabletop and analog games. The Unplugged concept was originally introduced in 2017 in Pennsylvania, where the inaugural gathering highlighted the burgeoning tabletop sector.
Since that debut, the tabletop market has continued its upward trajectory, with designers, publishers, and players all contributing to a vibrant ecosystem. "The tabletop industry keeps expanding, and within the PAX community, analog gaming has truly flourished," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began evaluating the possibility of hosting another Unplugged event, they examined a range of major metropolitan areas. Their criteria included demand from existing exhibitor partners, the presence of a strong local tabletop community, and the logistical capacity of the city’s convention infrastructure.
"We were always inclined to return to the South," Gonzalez noted. "After weighing several options, Houston emerged not only as the most suitable location for a second Unplugged, but also as a perfect opportunity to bring PAX back to the fans who missed the PAX South experience." PAX South, which had become a beloved annual fixture for Texas gamers, was placed on indefinite hold in 2021 after the final show in San Antonio concluded in January 2020.
The hiatus left a noticeable gap in the regional gaming calendar, and many enthusiasts have been eager for a revival. By selecting Houston, the organizers aim to rekindle that excitement while also tapping into the city’s growing reputation as a hub for creative industries. The event will be hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center, a venue known for its expansive exhibition halls and modern amenities.
The schedule runs from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, providing three full days of programming. Attendees can expect a bustling expo floor dedicated to analog gaming exhibitors, ranging from established board‑game publishers to indie creators showcasing experimental prototypes. In addition to the exhibition space, the lineup includes a variety of panel discussions featuring designers, artists, and industry veterans who will share insights into game development, storytelling, and community building.
Competitive play will also be a cornerstone of the weekend. Organized tournaments will cover a wide spectrum of tabletop experiences, from classic strategy games to newer cooperative and role‑playing titles.
These events are designed to cater both to seasoned tournament veterans and to newcomers who simply want to try their hand at organized play. Community meet‑ups, hobbyist workshops, and open‑table sessions will provide ample opportunities for attendees to connect, learn, and play together in a relaxed environment. Looking ahead, Gonzalez emphasizes that the primary goal remains delivering an exceptional experience for both exhibitors and attendees at existing PAX events. "Our focus right now is to make sure the current shows are as polished and enjoyable as possible," he says.
"Launching PAXU Houston is a major commitment, and we want to give it the full attention it deserves before we consider any further expansion." He also highlights ongoing efforts to enhance the overall PAX ecosystem across the East and West coasts. New feature areas, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks are being introduced to keep the experience fresh and engaging.
"We’re constantly refining the expo hall, bringing in fresh games for fans to discover, and expanding the variety of content we offer," Gonzalez explains. "Our community has always been incredibly supportive, and even when the broader gaming industry encounters challenges, the passion of our fans remains unwavering." Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston will commence later this year, alongside applications for media representatives and content creators who wish to cover the event.
Organizers anticipate strong demand, given the pent‑up enthusiasm among tabletop enthusiasts in the region and the broader PAX fan base. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston promises to be a celebration of analog gaming culture, offering a rich blend of exhibition space, educational panels, competitive tournaments, and community‑focused activities. By returning to the South, the event not only fills the void left by the suspension of PAX South but also reinforces PAX’s commitment to supporting diverse gaming experiences across the United States.
Whether you are a veteran board‑game aficionado, a curious newcomer, or a creator looking to showcase your latest design, the 2027 Houston edition aims to provide a memorable and inclusive gathering for all.
