ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first‑ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This marks a significant milestone for the PAX brand, which has long been associated with digital gaming festivals, by expanding its footprint into the analogue‑gaming arena in a new, strategically chosen market. The concept of PAX Unplugged originated back in 2017 when the inaugural event was hosted in Pennsylvania. That initial gathering was dedicated exclusively to tabletop experiences—board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other non‑digital formats—catering to a growing segment of the gaming community that thrives on face‑to‑face interaction and tactile play.
Since then, the tabletop sector has continued its upward trajectory, with an ever‑expanding catalogue of titles, innovative mechanics, and a vibrant community of designers, publishers, and players. "The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explained Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began evaluating the feasibility of launching a second Unplugged event, they undertook a comprehensive analysis of potential host cities. Key criteria included the level of demand expressed by existing and prospective exhibitors, the availability of suitable venues, and the overall infrastructure needed to support a large‑scale convention.
"We considered a number of major cities, factoring in demand from our exhibitor partners to place a tabletop PAX in this region and city infrastructure," Gonzalez said. The South emerged as a particularly attractive region, given its enthusiastic fan base and the historical presence of PAX South, which had cultivated a loyal following before its cancellation.
Houston ultimately stood out as the optimal choice. Not only does the city boast a modern convention center—George R.
Brown Convention Center—with ample exhibition space, but it also offers a diverse demographic of gamers, a robust hospitality industry, and excellent transportation links. "We were always partial to returning to the South, and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us," Gonzalez added. PAX South, the regional off‑shoot that once served the Texas market, was officially cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021 after its final edition in San Antonio in January 2020.
The decision left a noticeable void for fans in the area who had come to rely on the annual event for community building, product demos, and networking opportunities. The arrival of PAX Unplugged Houston is therefore being framed not just as a new convention, but as a revival of the PAX spirit for Southern enthusiasts who have been without a local gathering for several years.
The three‑day schedule, running from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, will feature a sprawling expo floor dedicated to analogue gaming exhibitors. Attendees can expect to encounter a wide array of publishers showcasing upcoming board games, expansions, and limited‑edition releases, as well as indie creators presenting experimental designs.
In addition to the exhibition space, the program will include a robust lineup of panels covering topics such as game design theory, inclusive gaming practices, and the business side of tabletop publishing. Competitive play will also be a cornerstone of the event. Tournaments ranging from casual, family‑friendly formats to high‑stakes, championship‑level contests will be organized across multiple game systems. These competitions aim to foster both community interaction and a healthy spirit of rivalry, offering prize support and visibility for top players and emerging talent alike.
Community meetups will be woven throughout the convention, providing dedicated time slots for local gaming clubs, hobbyist groups, and fan societies to gather, share experiences, and recruit new members. These gatherings are intended to reinforce the sense of belonging that PAX has cultivated over the years, ensuring that the convention serves not only as a marketplace but also as a social hub. When asked about the broader vision for PAX’s expansion, Gonzalez emphasized that the primary objective remains delivering the highest possible experience for current exhibitors and attendees.
"We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he remarked. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each new event meets the rigorous standards that fans have come to expect. Nevertheless, the team is actively exploring ways to enhance the overall offering across all PAX locations.
Gonzalez hinted at ongoing developments such as new feature areas, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks on both the East and West coasts. These enhancements aim to keep the convention fresh and engaging, continuously introducing fresh games and experiences for the community to discover. The resilience of the PAX community has been a recurring theme in Gonzalez’s statements.
Even during periods of industry turbulence—whether due to supply chain disruptions, market fluctuations, or broader economic challenges—the fan base has remained passionate and supportive. "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," he affirmed.
Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston are slated to open later this year, accompanied by a call for media and content‑creator applications. Organizers anticipate a strong response from both seasoned tabletop veterans and newcomers eager to explore the analog side of gaming. By delivering a comprehensive, immersive experience that blends exhibition, education, competition, and community, PAX Unplugged Houston aspires to become a cornerstone event for the Southern United States and a model for future Unplugged conventions worldwide.
