Amazon Announces 9,000 Job Cuts

In a recent update on March 21, 2023, Twitch confirmed that it will be letting go of more than 400 employees as part of Amazon's plan to eliminate 9,000 roles. According to a statement by Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, the decision is a response to the 'current macroeconomic environment' and the failure of user and revenue growth to meet expectations. Clancy stated, 'To ensure the sustainability of our business, we have made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce.' This announcement follows an initial statement by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy on March 20, 2023, informing employees that the company intends to cut approximately 9,000 positions, primarily in AWS, PXT, advertising, and Twitch, by the end of the month. Jassy attributed the decision to the need for long-term streamlining due to the current economic uncertainty, which has led to a significant addition of employees in recent years. The company has re-evaluated its operations based on consumer priorities, resulting in role reductions. This move is part of a larger effort, which included the layoff of 18,000 employees in January. The news comes on the heels of Meta's announcement to lay off 10,000 employees and cancel 5,000 open positions by the end of the year.
