Keywords Studios has announced the creation of FreeAnimal, a consolidated entity that brings together seven of its previously separate creative agencies under one umbrella. This strategic move is designed to give developers, publishers, and brand owners a single, streamlined point of contact for all of their creative and marketing needs. The new FreeAnimal network is composed of the creative powerhouses Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, and Gnet, as well as the media production studios TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer.
Together these teams span key industry hubs including Los Angeles, London, Brighton, Montreal, and Quebec, providing a truly global footprint. Each of the seven firms posted coordinated announcements on LinkedIn, signaling the start of a new era in which they will operate as a unified creative agency.
While existing contracts with current clients will remain intact, any future work will be drawn from the combined expertise, resources, and talent pool of the newly formed FreeAnimal organization. "Collectively, we work with the world's most ambitious gaming brands," explained John Rosenberg, the global head of FreeAnimal.
"By fusing seven agencies' perspectives, geographies, and experiences from across the games industry, we've created a wildly effective creative organisation that combines boutique strike teams with global scale." Rosenberg added that the agency's philosophy is summed up in the phrase "The Right Team for Every Game." This approach means assembling the appropriate specialists at the precise moment they are needed, ensuring that each client receives a tailored solution to their specific challenge. Keywords Studios itself was founded in 1998 as an outsourcing specialist. The company began an aggressive acquisition campaign in 2014, starting with the voice‑production studio Liquid Violet.
Since that initial purchase, Keywords has added roughly 70 companies to its portfolio, broadening its service offering to include audio production, art creation, localisation, quality assurance, functional testing, engineering, player support, trailer production, marketing, and data analytics. The most recent additions to the Keywords family include Certain Affinity, a co‑developer on the Halo franchise, and Wushu Studios, a work‑for‑hire studio, both of which were acquired in 2024. Earlier in the year, Keywords also merged two of its public‑relations firms—Fortyseven Communications and Indigo Pearl—after Fortyseven opened a new London office, further consolidating its PR capabilities. FreeAnimal's formation reflects a broader industry trend toward integrated service models.
Game developers increasingly prefer to work with a single partner that can handle everything from concept art and narrative design to marketing campaigns and community management. By uniting seven distinct agencies, FreeAnimal can offer end‑to‑end creative solutions while still preserving the boutique, specialist focus that each original firm is known for.
The agency's geographic spread is another strategic advantage. Los Angeles provides proximity to major North American publishers and a deep talent pool in entertainment production. London and Brighton give access to Europe's vibrant game development scene and a strong tradition of creative advertising.
Meanwhile, Montreal and Quebec serve as hubs for both French‑language localisation and a thriving indie development community. This multi‑city presence ensures that FreeAnimal can respond quickly to client needs across time zones and cultural markets. In practice, the "Right Team for Every Game" methodology means that a client launching a new AAA title might draw on Ichi's expertise in brand storytelling, KWM's prowess in performance marketing, Fire Without Smoke's skill in community engagement, and TrailerFarm's capacity to produce high‑impact video assets. At the same time, a smaller indie studio could benefit from Maverick's agile production workflow and Big Farmer's cost‑effective media services.
FreeAnimal also plans to leverage the data analytics capabilities that Keywords has built up over the years. By integrating player behaviour data, market trends, and campaign performance metrics, the agency can provide clients with actionable insights that inform creative decisions, optimize spend, and improve player acquisition and retention.
Looking ahead, the leadership team anticipates that the unified structure will accelerate project timelines, reduce overhead for clients, and foster cross‑pollination of ideas among the formerly separate agencies. This collaborative environment is expected to spark innovative campaign concepts that blend traditional marketing with emerging technologies such as interactive trailers, augmented reality experiences, and AI‑driven personalization.
In summary, FreeAnimal represents Keywords Studios' most ambitious consolidation to date, bringing together seven specialized firms into a single, globally distributed creative agency. The move is intended to simplify client relationships, expand service breadth, and maintain the high‑quality, boutique‑style execution that each original agency is known for, all while operating at a scale that can meet the demands of the world's leading gaming brands.
