Keywords Studios has announced the creation of FreeAnimal, a consolidated organisation that brings together seven of its previously independent creative agencies under a single banner. The strategic move is designed to provide developers, publishers, and brand owners with a streamlined point of contact for all their creative and marketing needs, while leveraging the combined expertise, geographic reach, and specialised skill sets of each constituent firm. The new entity comprises four creative agencies— Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, and Gnet—alongside three media‑production studios: TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer. Together these teams form a trans‑continental network with offices in key industry hubs such as Los Angeles, London, Brighton, Montreal, and Quebec City.
By uniting these locations, FreeAnimal can offer clients a truly global perspective while maintaining the boutique‑level attention that each original agency was known for. All seven companies posted coordinated announcements on LinkedIn, signalling the start of a new chapter in which they will operate as a single creative agency. While the legal contracts with existing customers remain unchanged, future work will be sourced from the broader pool of talent and resources now available within FreeAnimal.
This approach promises greater flexibility for clients, who can tap into a wider array of services—ranging from concept art and narrative design to trailer production, influencer marketing, and data‑driven campaign analysis—without having to manage multiple vendor relationships. "Collectively, we work with the world's most ambitious gaming brands," said John Rosenberg, Global Head of FreeAnimal. "By fusing seven agencies' perspectives, geographies, and experiences from across the games industry, we've created a wildly effective creative organisation that combines boutique strike teams with global scale." Rosenberg highlighted the philosophy that underpins the new structure: "At FreeAnimal we simply call the approach The Right Team for Every Game, bringing together the right specialists, at the right time, to solve the right challenge for every client." The formation of FreeAnimal is part of a broader evolution that began when Keywords Studios was founded in 1998 as a modest outsourcing operation. The company entered the acquisition market in 2014 with the purchase of voice‑production studio Liquid Violet, marking the start of an aggressive expansion strategy.
Over the ensuing decade Keywords has added roughly 70 companies to its portfolio, diversifying into audio, art, localisation, quality assurance, functional testing, engineering, player support, trailer creation, marketing, and data analytics. Recent acquisitions illustrate the breadth of Keywords' ambitions. In 2024 the group secured Certain Affinity, a co‑developer on the Halo franchise, and Wushu Studios, a work‑for‑hire studio known for its rapid‑turnaround production pipelines. Earlier in the year, Keywords merged two of its public‑relations outfits—Fortyseven Communications and Indigo Pearl—after Fortyseven opened a new London office, further consolidating its communications capabilities in Europe.
FreeAnimal's launch signals a shift from a fragmented agency model to an integrated service platform that can respond to the increasingly complex demands of modern game marketing. Game launches today often involve coordinated campaigns across multiple media channels, live‑stream events, community engagement initiatives, and data‑driven optimisation. By housing all of these functions under one roof, FreeAnimal can orchestrate campaigns with a level of cohesion and speed that would be difficult to achieve when working with separate vendors.
For developers, especially independent studios lacking extensive in‑house marketing teams, the new agency offers a one‑stop shop. A small studio can now approach FreeAnimal and receive a tailored package that might include brand strategy, visual identity, cinematic trailer production, influencer outreach, and post‑launch community management—all coordinated by a single account manager who understands the project's full lifecycle. Publishers benefit as well.
Large publishers often juggle multiple titles simultaneously, each with its own release schedule and target audience. FreeAnimal's global footprint means that regional nuances—such as cultural preferences in North America versus Europe or Asia—can be addressed by local experts while maintaining a consistent overarching brand narrative. Brands outside the gaming sphere, looking to tap into the lucrative gamer demographic, also gain a partner capable of crafting authentic experiences that resonate with players.
By leveraging the agency's deep immersion in gaming culture, brands can avoid generic advertising and instead create campaigns that feel native to the gaming environment. In practice, the "Right Team for Every Game" model works by first assessing the specific challenge a client faces—whether it's building hype for an upcoming release, revitalising an older franchise, or entering a new market. FreeAnimal then assembles a cross‑functional squad drawn from its seven legacy agencies, ensuring that each specialist—be it a narrative writer, a motion‑capture director, a data analyst, or a community manager—contributes at the optimal stage of the project.
The consolidation also offers internal efficiencies. Shared technology platforms, unified project‑management tools, and common reporting standards reduce overhead and accelerate decision‑making. Employees from the former independent agencies now have access to a larger talent pool for collaboration, mentorship, and career development, which can boost creativity and innovation across the board. Overall, FreeAnimal represents Keywords Studios' latest effort to transform from a collection of outsourced service providers into a cohesive, world‑class creative partner for the gaming industry.
By merging seven specialized firms into a single, agile organisation, the company aims to deliver more impactful, data‑informed, and culturally resonant campaigns that meet the evolving expectations of gamers and brands alike.
