ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This marks a significant expansion of the PAX family, bringing the beloved tabletop‑focused experience to a new region after a six‑year hiatus for the southern fan base.

The original PAX Unplugged concept debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017, offering a dedicated space for board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other analog formats. Since that inaugural edition, the tabletop sector has continued its rapid growth, with more designers, publishers, and hobbyists entering the market each year.

"The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explains Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began exploring the possibility of a second Unplugged event, they evaluated a handful of major metropolitan areas. Their criteria included demand from existing and prospective exhibitors, the presence of a vibrant local gaming community, and the logistical capacity of the city’s convention facilities. "We were always partial to returning to the South," Gonzalez notes.

"After comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us." PAX South, which had previously been held in Austin, Texas, was cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021 after its last live edition in San Antonio in January 2020. The cancellation left a noticeable gap for gamers in the region who had come to rely on the annual gathering for networking, playtesting, and community building. The announcement of PAX Unplugged Houston therefore serves as both a revival and a fresh start, offering a dedicated tabletop experience while honoring the legacy of the former South event. The venue for the upcoming convention is the George R.

Brown Convention Center, a sprawling facility located in downtown Houston. The three‑day schedule runs from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027.

Attendees can expect a robust expo floor populated by a wide array of analog gaming exhibitors, ranging from well‑established publishers to indie creators showcasing prototype projects. In addition to the exhibition space, the program will feature a series of panels covering game design, storytelling, community building, and industry trends. Competitive play will also be a major component of the weekend. Organized tournaments for popular board games, collectible card games, and role‑playing game scenarios will give participants a chance to test their skills against fellow enthusiasts.

Community meet‑ups, hobbyist workshops, and demo sessions will provide ample opportunities for newcomers to learn the basics of various games and for seasoned players to discover hidden gems. Regarding the broader strategy for PAX’s growth, Gonzalez emphasizes that the primary objective remains delivering the highest possible experience for both exhibitors and attendees at existing events. "We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he says.

This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each new location receives the resources and planning needed to succeed. Gonzalez also highlights ongoing enhancements across the PAX portfolio. "We're actively expanding the shows, introducing new feature areas, stages, and programming tracks at East and West, while constantly delivering a great expo hall with new games for fans to discover," he explains.

These additions include dedicated zones for indie developers, interactive theater spaces, and curated experiences that blend gaming with other forms of entertainment. The PAX community has long been praised for its passion and resilience.

Even during periods when the broader gaming industry faces economic or logistical challenges, the fan base continues to rally around the events, supporting creators, retailers, and fellow gamers alike. "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX. Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," Gonzalez adds.

Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston are expected to open later this year, alongside applications for media representatives and content creators who wish to cover the event. Organizers anticipate a strong response, given the pent‑up demand in the southern United States for a large‑scale tabletop gathering. In addition to standard admission options, there will be premium passes offering early access to the expo floor, exclusive meet‑and‑greet sessions with game designers, and reserved seating for high‑profile panels.

For those interested in participating as exhibitors, the application window will also open in the upcoming months. ReedPop and Penny Arcade have indicated that they will prioritize a diverse mix of publishers, from legacy brands to emerging indie studios, to ensure a rich and varied showcase for attendees. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston promises to be a landmark event for tabletop enthusiasts across the region.

By situating the convention in a city with a thriving cultural scene and robust infrastructure, the organizers aim to create an immersive, community‑focused experience that honors the spirit of the original Unplugged while charting a path forward for future expansions. Fans can look forward to three days of gaming, learning, competition, and connection, all set against the backdrop of Houston’s vibrant downtown. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding the detailed schedule, guest speakers, and special attractions as the event draws nearer.
