UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to unveil the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a dedicated business‑focused programme designed specifically for independent game studios operating out of the United Kingdom. This collaborative effort recognises that many promising indie titles stumble not because of a lack of creative vision, but due to insufficient guidance on how to reach and retain an audience in today’s crowded marketplace. By pairing the expertise of the UK games trade body with the community‑building power of Discord, the Academy aims to fill that gap and give fledgling developers a clear pathway to commercial success. The Academy is structured around six comprehensive online modules, each targeting a critical component of a studio’s market strategy.

The first module introduces diagnostic tools and data‑driven insights, helping teams assess their current position, identify strengths, and pinpoint areas that need improvement. Subsequent sessions delve into the fundamentals of marketing strategy, from brand positioning to the mechanics of running effective promotional campaigns. A dedicated module explores how Discord can be leveraged as a central hub for community engagement, teaching studios how to set up servers, run events, and foster authentic interaction with players.

The final module focuses on studio branding, ensuring that developers present a cohesive visual and narrative identity across all channels. To enrich the learning experience, the Academy will feature guest speakers drawn from various sectors of the games industry, including seasoned marketers, successful indie founders, and platform experts.

These contributors will share real‑world case studies, offering participants actionable advice and inspiring examples of how thoughtful go‑to‑market planning can transform a modest project into a thriving franchise. Participation is limited to a select cohort of ten to twelve studios, ensuring that each team receives personalised attention and ample opportunity for mentorship. The programme kicks off with an in‑person gathering at EGX, which will be hosted within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month.

This initial meeting is designed to build camaraderie among the participants, introduce them to the curriculum, and set expectations for the weeks ahead. Following the launch event, the Academy moves online, delivering weekly sessions throughout November and early December. These virtual workshops will combine lectures, interactive breakout groups, and hands‑on assignments that require studios to apply the concepts to their own projects. The culmination of the Academy is another live event where each studio presents a fully developed go‑to‑market plan.

Throughout the course, teams will work on a shared case study, iterating their strategies based on feedback from peers, mentors, and the guest speakers. The final presentations will showcase how each studio intends to launch, market, and sustain their game, highlighting the audience‑building tactics they have refined using Discord’s community tools. Studios interested in joining the inaugural cohort can submit an application via the provided link, with the deadline set for 30 September 2026. Selection criteria will focus on the studio’s current development stage, the originality of their concept, and their commitment to leveraging the Academy’s resources to grow their audience.

"Go‑to‑market planning is where a lot of promising games fall down, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven't had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE. "The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how games communities actually form and grow." Mauro Sanna, Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, added his perspective: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." Beyond the immediate benefits of structured learning and networking, the Academy also aims to create a lasting support network among participating studios.

By fostering relationships during the in‑person sessions and encouraging collaboration throughout the online modules, UKIE hopes to nurture a community of alumni who can share resources, cross‑promote each other's titles, and collectively raise the profile of British indie games on the global stage. In an industry where marketing budgets are often limited and the competition for player attention is fierce, the Go‑To‑Market Academy represents a strategic investment in the future of independent game development in the UK. By equipping developers with the knowledge, tools, and community connections they need, the programme aspires to turn innovative ideas into successful, sustainable games that resonate with audiences worldwide.
