Washington Post to Discontinue Gaming Section

According to a report by Axios media reporter Sara Fischer, The Washington Post is undergoing a restructuring process that includes layoffs and the discontinuation of its video game section, Launcher. A memo sent by executive editor Sally Buzbee to staff members revealed that twenty newsroom employees will be let go, and thirty vacant positions will not be filled. Although the memo does not explicitly mention Launcher, Fischer's sources confirm that the gaming label, along with KidsPost, will be phased out. The Post launched Launcher in 2019 as a dedicated gaming section, aiming to provide in-depth coverage with a team of classically trained journalists who are also gamers. This move follows a series of layoffs in the gaming media industry, with notable outlets such as IGN, Polygon, and Game Informer having experienced staff reductions in recent months. The latest round of layoffs has affected GameSpot, Giant Bomb, and Vox Media, highlighting the challenges faced by the industry.
