Recent Layoffs Hit GameSpot and Giant Bomb Following Fandom Acquisition

A new wave of layoffs has impacted the media industry, with GameSpot and Giant Bomb being the most recent casualties. The news broke when several staff members from both teams took to social media to announce their job loss. According to Kotaku, the layoffs were revealed during an impromptu company-wide meeting led by Perkins Miller, the CEO of Fandom, the parent company of the two sites. Sources close to the matter disclosed to Kotaku that approximately 40 to 50 employees were affected across the company. Although the exact number of layoffs at Giant Bomb and GameSpot is unclear, confirmed departures include former Giant Bomb staff member Jess 'Voidburger' O'Brien and Jason Oestreicher, as well as GameSpot's entertainment editor Mat Elfring and lead brand designer Justin Vachon, who worked across both sites. In response to the layoffs, Giant Bomb has temporarily halted content publication. Miller reportedly informed Fandom staff that the company remains profitable but did not address employee questions. Fandom has yet to release an official statement. This development comes just three months after Fandom acquired GameSpot, Giant Bomb, Metacritic, and other sites in a $55 million deal. It also follows the departure of Giant Bomb co-founder Jeff Gertsmann in June. The games media sector has experienced a series of layoffs in recent months, affecting publications such as IGN, Polygon, GameByte, Game Informer, Future, Fanbyte, and Vice. Additionally, the revived G4 was shut down after a year of operation. The gaming industry has also seen significant job losses, including 10,000 employees at Microsoft, with some staff from Bethesda and 343 Industries being let go, as well as redundancies at Unity, NetEase, Wizards of the Coast, and Ubisoft.
