Majority of Game Developers Favor Industry Unionization

A recent survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference has shown that a significant proportion of developers in the industry support unionization efforts, with 53% of respondents expressing their support. The survey, which garnered responses from over 2,300 developers, also found that 24% were undecided, 13% opposed the idea, and 10% were unsure. Compared to the previous year's survey, which reported 55% support for unionization, this year's results indicate a slight decline in enthusiasm. However, the survey also revealed that discussions about unionization are not commonly taking place among coworkers, with 60% of respondents stating that no such conversations had occurred at their company. Regarding other issues in the industry, 91% of developers considered toxicity towards studios and players to be a problem. In terms of working conditions, 62% of game creators reported working 40 hours or less per week. The survey also touched on the topic of blockchain gaming and NFTs, with 14% of respondents expressing support, 61% opposing the idea, and 25% remaining uncertain. On a positive note, 59% of game developers felt that their studios were adequately focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
