UKIE has joined forces with Discord and GameFlex to introduce the Go‑To‑Market Academy, a dedicated business‑focused programme aimed at uplifting independent game studios based in the United Kingdom. This collaborative effort recognises that many promising indie projects stumble not because of a lack of creative vision, but due to insufficient guidance on how to reach and retain an audience in today’s crowded market.

The Academy’s core mission is to equip early‑stage developers with a comprehensive toolkit for constructing effective go‑to‑market strategies and nurturing sustainable communities around their titles. By blending practical instruction with real‑world case studies, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between game creation and successful commercial launch. Structured as a six‑module online curriculum, the Academy covers a broad spectrum of topics essential for indie success. Participants will begin with diagnostic assessments and market insights, learning how to analyse player demographics, competitive landscapes, and emerging trends.

Subsequent modules dive into the creation of robust marketing strategies, from brand positioning to multi‑channel campaign execution. A dedicated segment explores the unique advantages of Discord as a community‑building platform, offering hands‑on guidance for leveraging servers, bots, events, and moderation tools to foster engaged fan bases. The final module focuses on studio branding, teaching developers how to craft a cohesive visual and narrative identity that resonates across social media, press outlets, and storefronts.

Industry experts will supplement the core curriculum, delivering guest lectures and Q&A sessions that bring insider perspectives from seasoned publishers, marketing agencies, and successful indie creators. These interactions are designed to provide actionable advice and networking opportunities that extend beyond the virtual classroom.

The Academy will admit a limited cohort of ten to twelve studios, ensuring each team receives personalised attention and feedback. The programme kicks off with an in‑person kickoff event at EGX, held within the MCM Comic Con venue in London next month. This opening session will allow participants to meet mentors, network with peers, and set the stage for the collaborative case study that will run throughout the Academy. Following the launch, a series of online workshops will be scheduled across November and early December.

These sessions will combine live instruction, breakout discussions, and hands‑on assignments, enabling studios to apply concepts directly to their own projects. Throughout the curriculum, each studio will work on a shared case study, developing a concrete go‑to‑market plan that integrates the lessons learned. The culmination of the Academy will be a second in‑person gathering, where each participating studio will present its finalized go‑to‑market strategy to a panel of judges, mentors, and fellow developers. This showcase not only provides valuable exposure but also offers constructive critique that can be immediately implemented as studios move toward launch.

Applications are now open, and interested indie studios can submit their proposals via the provided link. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2026, after which a selection committee will evaluate candidates based on criteria such as project maturity, market potential, and alignment with the Academy’s objectives.

"Go‑to‑market planning is where many promising games falter, not because studios lack good ideas, but because they haven’t had the time or support to build the audience and community that gives those ideas a chance to flourish," explained UKIE CEO Nick Poole. "The Go‑To‑Market Academy gives indie studios the space to work through that properly, with direct input from Discord on a platform that’s become central to how game communities actually form and grow." Discord’s Director of Public Policy for EMEA, Mauro Sanna, echoed this sentiment, stating: "The UK's indie games scene is full of talent and opportunity, and we're delighted to partner with UKIE to help it thrive. We're excited to help this group of UK developers learn how to make the most of Discord to connect with our highly engaged gaming audience, build communities and grow their games." By combining the expertise of UKIE, the community‑centric tools of Discord, and the strategic guidance of GameFlex, the Go‑To‑Market Academy aspires to create a pipeline of well‑prepared indie titles that can confidently navigate the complexities of modern game publishing. Through mentorship, practical training, and a focus on community engagement, the programme aims to turn creative concepts into commercially viable experiences, ultimately strengthening the UK’s reputation as a hub for innovative independent game development.
