Navigating Uncharted Territory in Syberia

The passing of BenoƮt Sokal in May 2021 sent shockwaves through the gaming community. As the mastermind behind the Syberia adventure game series, his legacy was still unfolding with the fourth installment, Syberia: The World Before, which was nearing completion at the time of his death. Lucas Lagravette, the game's director and lead writer, took the reins to ensure the project stayed true to Sokal's vision. In an interview, Lagravette reflected on the experience of finishing the game without Sokal, emphasizing the creator's significant involvement in the project up until his passing. Sokal had seen an advanced alpha version of the game and was aware of all the content, providing reassurance to the team that he was satisfied with the direction of the game. Despite struggling with a long-term illness, Sokal remained closely involved in the game's development, even contributing new ideas just weeks before his death. Lagravette, who first collaborated with Sokal on Syberia 3, acknowledged the challenges they faced with that game, including a junior team and a publisher who had not handled a project of that scale before. However, those experiences laid the groundwork for a strong foundation in The World Before, with Lagravette and Sokal developing a trust that allowed for a more efficient creative process. Sokal's trust in Lagravette and the team enabled him to focus on the overarching vision, while Lagravette kept him informed of key decisions. The process worked seamlessly, with Lagravette rarely misjudging which elements Sokal would want to be involved in. With Sokal's passing, Lagravette was tasked with making some decisions about the game's content, but he was grateful that there were no major cuts or deviations from the plan. He recalled some sleepless nights, particularly regarding the game's sensitive portrayal of World War II and the Holocaust in an alternate universe. The team was mindful of the need to be respectful and careful in their representation, using what Sokal termed 'taking a light step from reality.' While there are currently no concrete plans for a future Syberia game without Sokal, Lagravette confirmed that the late creator had left behind ideas for a potential sequel. The challenge of creating new elements of the Syberia universe without Sokal's guidance would be significant, and Lagravette acknowledged that it would require a team effort to determine the best approach.
