UK Government Urged to Enhance Support for Creative Sectors

The House of Lords has cautioned the UK government against complacency regarding the nation's creative industries, emphasizing the need for improved support to maintain global competitiveness. A recent report by the communications committee outlines recommendations to bolster the growth of the UK's games, film, television, music, and other creative businesses. The report highlights the significant contribution of these sectors to the UK economy, valued at over £115 billion in 2019, surpassing the combined value of the aerospace, automotive, and life sciences industries. Key recommendations include revising tax relief schemes to make them more inclusive of creative businesses, protecting intellectual property, and addressing skills shortages through a cross-government approach. The committee also suggests benchmarking UK tax reliefs against international competitors to enhance the nation's competitiveness. Other proposed measures include reevaluating changes to text and data mining regulations and identifying ways to continue successful aspects of the Creative Clusters Programme. According to Baroness Stowell, committee chair, the UK's creative industries are a significant economic driver, but their success is threatened by changing fundamentals and increasing competition from rivals.
