Keywords Studios has announced the creation of FreeAnimal, a unified organization that brings together seven of its previously independent creative agencies under one roof. This strategic move is designed to provide developers, publishers, and brand owners with a single, streamlined point of contact for all of their creative and marketing needs.
The newly minted FreeAnimal network incorporates the creative powerhouses Ichi, KWM, Fire Without Smoke, and Gnet, alongside the media production studios TrailerFarm, Maverick, and Big Farmer. Together, these entities span key industry hubs, including Los Angeles, London, Brighton, Montreal, and Quebec City, offering a truly global footprint.
Each of the seven firms posted coordinated announcements on LinkedIn, signalling the start of a new era as a single, cohesive creative agency. While existing client contracts will continue unchanged, future projects are expected to draw on the combined expertise, resources, and geographic reach of the FreeAnimal umbrella. "Collectively, we work with the world's most ambitious gaming brands," said John Rosenberg, Global Head of FreeAnimal. "By fusing seven agencies' perspectives, geographies, and experiences from across the games industry, we've created a wildly effective creative organisation that combines boutique strike teams with global scale." Rosenberg added that FreeAnimal operates under a philosophy he calls "The Right Team for Every Game," which means assembling the optimal specialists at the optimal moment to address each client's unique challenges.
Founded in 1998, Keywords Studios began as an outsourcing specialist and started expanding its portfolio through acquisitions in 2014, beginning with the voice production studio Liquid Violet. Since that initial purchase, Keywords has added roughly 70 companies to its roster, broadening its service catalogue to include audio production, art creation, localisation, quality assurance, functional testing, engineering support, player services, trailer production, marketing, and data analytics. The most recent additions to the Keywords family include Certain Affinity, a co‑developer on the Halo franchise, and Wushu Studios, a work‑for‑hire studio, both of which were acquired in 2024. Earlier in the year, Keywords also merged two of its public‑relations agencies—Fortyseven Communications and Indigo Pearl—after Fortyseven opened a new London office.
FreeAnimal's formation reflects Keywords Studios' ongoing strategy to consolidate complementary capabilities and present a unified front to the gaming industry. By bringing together agencies with distinct creative styles, regional insights, and technical expertise, the new entity aims to deliver more integrated campaigns, faster turnaround times, and a higher level of strategic alignment for its clients. The agency's geographic spread is a notable advantage. Los Angeles offers proximity to major North American publishers and a deep talent pool in entertainment production.
London and Brighton provide access to the vibrant European market and a wealth of creative professionals. Meanwhile, the Canadian locations of Montreal and Quebec City give FreeAnimal a foothold in a region known for its strong gaming development community and bilingual capabilities, which can be especially valuable for localisation projects.
Clients can now approach FreeAnimal with a single brief and receive a coordinated response that leverages the full suite of services—whether they need a cinematic trailer, a comprehensive marketing rollout, localized copy for multiple regions, or a full‑service creative campaign that blends art direction with community engagement. The "Right Team for Every Game" mantra ensures that each project is staffed with the most appropriate talent, drawing from the combined pool of designers, writers, producers, marketers, and technologists across the seven legacy agencies. Industry observers see this consolidation as part of a broader trend where large service providers are streamlining their offerings to reduce friction for game developers who increasingly prefer end‑to‑end solutions.
By eliminating the need to negotiate with multiple vendors, FreeAnimal promises greater efficiency, clearer accountability, and a more cohesive creative vision. In summary, FreeAnimal represents Keywords Studios' ambition to evolve from a collection of specialized outsourcing firms into a singular, globally‑connected creative powerhouse.
The agency's integrated structure, expansive geographic presence, and commitment to matching the right expertise with each client’s needs position it to become a leading partner for the world's most ambitious gaming brands.
