Vampire Survivors Developer Reveals Clone Games Accelerated Mobile Release

The mobile launch of Vampire Survivors occurred last month, although developer Luca Galante initially planned to release it much sooner. In a recent Steam store page update, Galante discussed the mobile development process, stating, "Following the game's initial success, I searched for a business partner to collaborate on a mobile version, but unfortunately, none of the potential partners agreed with my proposed monetization strategy, which prioritized a non-predatory approach." After months of unsuccessful searching, Poncle decided to handle the mobile port internally when numerous clones of the game, featuring stolen code, assets, and progression data, began to emerge. According to Galante, "The clones forced us to expedite the mobile release, placing significant stress on our development team, which wasn't initially intended to work on the mobile version." The mobile version of Vampire Survivors adheres to Galante's envisioned monetization model. It is free to play, offering players the option to watch an ad after their run to revive their character and partially restore their health. Additionally, players can watch an ad after their run to earn extra gold, which can be used to unlock or upgrade characters. Galante explained, "If you're like me, you'd have preferred to pay a small fee for the mobile version and be done with it. However, the mobile market doesn't operate that way, and by making Vampire Survivors a paid app, I would have excluded many potential players who might not have tried the game otherwise." "This is why we opted for a free-to-play approach with minimal and optional monetization, allowing players to control their experience through 'watch ads' buttons, without any real-money transactions or exploitation." Galante also mentioned that Poncle is working on cloud saves and save transfers for the mobile version and is considering how to release and monetize the Legacy of the Moonspell DLC on mobile.
