ReedPop, in partnership with Penny Arcade, has officially unveiled plans for the first-ever PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to take place in June 2027. This new installment follows the original Unplugged concept, which debuted in Pennsylvania back in 2017 as a celebration of tabletop and analog gaming experiences separate from the larger video‑game‑centric PAX festivals. Since that inaugural gathering, the tabletop sector has continued its rapid expansion, with designers, publishers, and fans alike embracing board games, card games, role‑playing games, and other physical formats.
"The tabletop industry continues to grow, and tabletop gaming really flourishes among the PAX community," explained Sean Gonzalez, the event manager for PAX, in a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. When the team began exploring the possibility of hosting another Unplugged event, they evaluated a range of major metropolitan areas.
Their decision‑making process weighed factors such as demand from existing and prospective exhibitor partners, the strength of local tabletop communities, and the logistical capacity of each city’s convention facilities. Gonzalez noted that the South has always held a special place in PAX’s history, and after a thorough comparison of several candidates, Houston emerged as the clear front‑runner.
"We were always partial to returning to the South, and after comparing a few options we were happy to find that not only was Houston the best place to launch a second Unplugged, but it was a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us," he said. PAX South, which had built a loyal following in Texas since its launch, was abruptly cancelled "for the foreseeable future" in 2021, with its final event having taken place in San Antonio in January 2020.
The cancellation left a noticeable gap in the regional gaming calendar, and many enthusiasts have been eager for a revival of the PAX experience in the Lone Star State. The announcement of PAX Unplugged Houston therefore represents both a fresh start and a nostalgic nod to the community that previously gathered under the PAX South banner. The event will be hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center, a venue known for its expansive floor space and modern amenities, making it well‑suited for the diverse programming PAX aims to deliver.
The three‑day schedule runs from Friday, June 25, through Sunday, June 27, 2027, and promises a packed itinerary that includes a sprawling expo floor dedicated to analogue gaming exhibitors. Attendees can expect to encounter a wide array of tabletop publishers showcasing new releases, classic titles, and experimental prototypes. In addition to the vendor hall, the convention will feature a robust lineup of panels covering design theory, industry trends, and community building, as well as organized tournaments for popular board and card games.
Community meet‑ups will also play a central role, offering spaces for local gaming clubs, hobbyist groups, and fan societies to connect, share resources, and organize spontaneous play sessions. These gatherings aim to foster the collaborative spirit that has long defined PAX events, where the line between creator and consumer often blurs in favor of shared passion. Looking ahead, Gonzalez emphasized that the primary goal remains delivering an exceptional experience for both exhibitors and attendees at existing PAX shows before pursuing further expansion.
"We are now launching PAXU Houston and giving it the attention it deserves, before we even consider expanding any further," he remarked. This measured approach reflects a commitment to quality over quantity, ensuring that each event maintains the high standards that fans have come to expect. Nevertheless, the team is not standing still. Gonzalez highlighted ongoing efforts to broaden the scope of PAX festivals across the country, noting that new feature areas, additional stages, and diversified programming tracks are being introduced at both the East and West coast events.
These enhancements aim to keep the expo halls fresh, with a constant rotation of new games for attendees to discover and test. "We've always been grateful for the industry names and our dedicated community that continues to support PAX.
Even when the gaming industry faces challenges, our community continues to be as passionate as ever," Gonzalez added. Ticket sales for PAX Unplugged Houston will commence later this year, accompanied by an open call for media representatives and content creators who wish to cover the event.
Interested parties are encouraged to keep an eye on the official PAX website for announcements regarding pricing tiers, early‑bird discounts, and application deadlines. As the date approaches, further details about the specific panelists, tournament line‑ups, and special guest appearances will be released, promising a vibrant and immersive experience for tabletop enthusiasts across the region and beyond. In summary, PAX Unplugged Houston represents a strategic and heartfelt return to the Southern gaming scene, offering a dedicated platform for analog game lovers to convene, explore, and celebrate the ever‑growing world of tabletop entertainment. With a carefully chosen venue, a comprehensive program, and a clear focus on community engagement, the 2027 edition aims to set a new benchmark for what a tabletop‑centric convention can achieve.
