ByteDance Implements Additional Job Cuts in China

Towards the end of 2022, ByteDance allegedly undertaken a significant reduction in its Chinese workforce, with hundreds of employees impacted across various departments, including its gaming division. Sources close to the matter revealed to the South China Morning Post that the cuts extended to Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, and the company's real estate and gaming operations. A report by Chinese media outlet Jiemian indicated that Lark, known domestically as Feishu, saw a 10% reduction in staff as part of the broader layoffs. Although the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, it has been reported that those let go will receive severance packages based on their seniority and an additional month's salary. Notably, despite these layoffs, ByteDance is actively recruiting for over 10,000 positions, as listed on its website. This latest round of job cuts follows the company's earlier decision in September 2022 to downsize its video games operations, resulting in the loss of hundreds of jobs as part of an 'aggressive downsizing' effort.
