If Grand Theft Auto 6 had not debuted in 2026, the console market would have essentially flat‑lined when compared with the previous year, according to Newzoo’s market intelligence chief Emmanuel “Manu” Rosier. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at Gamescom 2026, Rosier emphasized that Rockstar’s flagship crime‑action title is the single most significant catalyst for any growth in the console segment this year. He also highlighted the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 as another key contributor to the sector’s performance.
"Two main forces are shaping the current and future health of consoles: the Switch 2 and, of course, the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 this year, which will push the market upward," Rosier explained. "If GTA 6 were not on the 2026 calendar, the platform would actually contract year‑over‑year. The game is fundamentally responsible for delivering positive growth in 2026." Newzoo’s latest Global Games Market Report reinforces this outlook, forecasting a 5.1% increase in console revenue for 2026, taking the total to $46.9 billion.
Within that growth, GTA 6 is expected to lift full‑game spending by 17.5%, a rate Newzoo describes as the strongest growth among all business models in the industry. Rosier also warned that the massive appeal of GTA 6 will likely be "cannibalistic" to other titles, a dynamic that has already prompted numerous developers to shift their launch windows in order to avoid direct competition with Rockstar’s juggernaut.
When asked whether the 2026 surge would be a one‑off "GTA bump" that might normalize in 2027, Rosier noted that the franchise’s catalog strength ensures its influence extends far beyond a single release cycle. "The story doesn’t end in 2026," he said, underscoring the enduring revenue potential of the series. The analyst admitted that the future of GTA Online remains uncertain. "We have no certainty about what GTA Online will become in the coming months and year," Rosier said.
"We know a transition will happen at some point, but Take‑Two has not communicated a timeline, so we can’t pinpoint when the shift between the current online ecosystem and the new GTA will occur. Nevertheless, it is generating substantial income. Our 2027 forecast already incorporates the PC launch of GTA 6, which will be another major driver, but we lack concrete details beyond historical patterns observed with previous GTA releases." Regarding the pricing strategy for GTA 6, Rosier observed that when a leading publisher raises its flagship price, the entire market often follows suit. He described the price elasticity for GTA 6 as "very low" because there is only one official version of the game, and consumer demand is exceptionally inelastic.
"Everyone’s been waiting so long," he said. "That doesn’t mean everyone can afford it, but historically, when top‑tier pricing climbs, it lifts the overall market. Indie titles have moved from $20 to $30, and we see a modest upward pressure on prices across the board." Beyond consoles, Newzoo’s report reaffirms that mobile remains the dominant revenue generator, accounting for 57% of global gaming income in 2026—equating to $121.1 billion, a 6.8% year‑over‑year increase. This growth is driven by higher player spend and the maturation of direct‑to‑consumer storefronts on smartphones and tablets.
The report also recalled that GTA 6 pre‑orders amassed $260 million in their first week of availability, underscoring the franchise’s unparalleled market pull. In sum, Newzoo’s analysis paints a picture of a console ecosystem that would otherwise be stagnant without the dual thrust of Nintendo’s next‑gen Switch and Rockstar’s blockbuster release, while mobile continues to dominate the broader gaming economy.
